"It's Time for a Roll Back," Says Group In Reaction to Decision on MTA Tolls The NYPIRG Straphangers Campaign today called on the Metropolitan Transportation Authority to quickly roll back fares and tolls in light of today's state court ruling finding the MTA misled the public while holding hearings on toll increases. "Two judges have now ruled that the MTA misled the public about its finances while asking the agency’s customers to pay more," said Gene Russianoff, staff attorney for the Campaign. "It's high time for the MTA to move to restore its credibility." Russianoff added: "I urge MTA leadership to comply quickly with the rulings of State Supreme Court Justice Louis York and Justice Robert Lippman to roll back fares and tolls and to hold a round of new hearings with honest and accurate information." "Two judges, two comptrollers and millions of outraged New Yorkers -- it's time for the MTA to make amends," said Russianoff. "Two judges examined the facts and concluded that the MTA made material misrepresentations to the public," said State Senator Eric Schneiderman, who is the lead counsel for the Straphangers Campaign in a lawsuit over the fare controversy. "I urge the MTA to drop its appeals. I am confident that a new round of hearings would bring a better fare deal for subway, bus and commuter rail riders, as well as keep 62 station booths open that are now slated for closure." - 30 -
