How Does Your Subway Line Rate? was made possible by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, which is a leader in supporting the assessment of the quality of government services. We greatly appreciate the guidance and interest of our program officer, Ted Greenwood.
The profiles and line ratings were designed by Matt Glomski and Gene Russianoff of the Straphangers Campaign in collaboration with Li Howard, who designed the profile masthead. Matt Glomski also crunched the numbers for the report and oversaw its production, a formidable undertaking. Steven Romalewski, director of NYPIRG's Computer Mapping Assistance Project, helped gather data, develop the profile criteria and refine our approach. Rebecca Weber provided expert graphics work. Campaign organizer Farouk Abdallah assisted with proofreading and production, as did NYPIRG's Tracy McDonagh.
The methodology for the profiles and the line ratings was developed in close consultation with the University Transportation Research Center at City College. We are indebted to the analytic skills of Yuko Nakanishi and Robert Paaswell, the director of UTRC.
We thank the following officials at MTA New York City Transit for their assistance: Martin Krieger at the Operations Planning Division; Lois Tendler and Debra Hall Moore at Government and Community Relations; Joseph Hoffman and Paula Smith at the Department of Subways; Kenneth Stuart and James Sears at Marketing Research and Analysis; and Executive Vice President Barbara Spencer.
Over the last decade, the quality and credibility of New York City Transit data on subway and bus service has steadily improved. Much credit goes to the independent Office of the MTA Inspector General, which has been a pioneer in improving the measurement of transit services. At the start of our project, we received expert and generous guidance from Gary Henderson, who has headed the MTA Inspector General's efforts in this area.
Finally, we want to acknowledge the transit riders who gave us feedback on the original design and contents of the line profiles. Special thanks to our colleagues in the transit riders advocacy community: Beverly Dolinsky, Michael Doyle, Johnathan Sigall and Andrew Albert of the New York City Transit Riders Council; Stephen Dobrow of the Committee for Better Transit; Ira Greenberg of the Office of New York State Assembly Member Catherine Nolan; and Susan Sheer and Joseph G. Rappaport of the Office of New York City Public Advocate Mark Green.
