Dear rider:
Yesterday, the MTA board of directors voted to approve whopping fare hikes and service cuts. The base fare will go to $2.50, a 30-day MetroCard will run $103, and fares on the LIRR and MetroNorth will go up more than 25%.
The service cuts are horrendous: five subway lines shortened or eliminated; 20-plus bus routes totally cut and dozens more with less service; greater waiting times and crowding throughout the system; and hundreds of station attendants.
The only remaining hope is that state legislators and Governor Paterson agree on a new transit aid package in the next few weeks. From our discussions with state officials, we believe this is still possible.
We urge you to weigh in that Albany come to the aid of riders while there is time. You can do by going by calling or emailing your elected officials. You can look up your State Assembly person and Senator here: http://nymap.elections.state.ny.us/nysboe/.
