Here's the sign board on a 1C NABI headed to the Bronx. Caught him at Sam's Club on Rt.9A in Elmsford Wednesday afternoon.

He pulled up farther than I expected but I snapped the photo anyway.

You can't really see the '1' but you CAN see it's a-

Both the 'C' and the 'W' (for West).

I guess a Bee Line Bus Time (Like MTA Bus Time) would be too much $$$ as well?

They told me it was a waste of time

Starting a thread in the Straphangers Forum. Especially about Bee-Line.

Well this thread is exactly one year old and it has averaged 38 views per day or over 250 a week, about 13,775 total.

My thought was, if you stick to what you know, what you experience, and you try to make it fun, people will read it.

Happy to say, that seems to be the case. smile

Thanks to everyone who has participated!

A Bronx-bound 1W stops in Elmsford Square late Monday to pick up passengers. My bus is next!

Let 'em off first, folks. smile

Wrong sign displayed. Should be 1W.

Most of the Bronx-bound 1Ws that I see have that sign:

Yesterday I took what might be my last ride on a 13 bus. Starting Monday I'll be commuting on the 5 from Yonkers.

The 13 is a good bus to use. For several hours morning and night it operates on a 20 minute headway. It gets crowded but there's usually no one standing. Case in point was the 13 I rode Friday morning. By the time we left Main Street in Tarrytown every seat -- and I mean EVERY seat -- was taken. I counted the people getting on and there were over 45 passengers (on a 44-seat Orion) and only a couple people standing.

Here's the 13 I rode Friday afternoon on my way home from work. Waiting at the light at Broadway and Main in Tarrytown. You can see the old Country Trust building (now Citibank) out the right side windows:

Yesterday I started commuting from Yonkers to Elmsford Square on the 5. The 5 bus I now take in the morning usually arrives at Elmsford Square about one red light ahead of the 13 I formerly rode. (This has been going on for years!) Monday I had just gotten off the 5 and was waiting to cross Rt.119 when the 13 went by. The driver saw me and waved! smile She's a relaxed and courteous operator and I'll miss her for sure.

Anyway the timing is about the same, the two 5s I rode (at least yesterday) seemed no more crowded than the 13 buses. On the morning trip there were a couple people standing after we left Nepperhan and Odell Avenues. There were no standees on the evening trip. It's a nice ride too, the part between Elmsford and Odell Avenue, anyway.

So far so good. And I must admit, I've always wanted to be a regular 5 rider. grin

Riding the 5 from Yonkers to Elmsford is kind of like riding the 13 from Tarrytown. Both routes carry a lot of riders, make frequent stops, have frequent service and make good time (the 13 on Rt.119 and the 5 on Rt.9A). The 5 probably carries more passengers, at least at rush hour, but unlike the 13 the 5 gets Artics, so the ratio of riders to seats is probably about the same.

One thing I learned quickly: in the morning (and sometimes at night) I transfer between the 5 and the 1C at Ardsley Square not Elmsford. The timing is better in the morning, when I can ride a 5-Ardsley and am almost guaranteed to make a good connection to a 1C. Believe it or not, the 5-Ardsleys carry a lot of riders too. Ardsley Square is a popular transfer point between the 1C-5-6-66. (Never knew that.)

Riding the 1C usually means lots of room. smile

Nobody in the back of this 1C but me!

It is HOT! But at least it's Friday afternoon, as folks board a 27 by Sam's Club on Saw Mill River Road in Elmsford.

My bus -- a 1C to Ardsley Square (and connection to the 5 after a quick stop at Starbucks for an iced coffee of course laugh ) -- is next.

Hoped for a NABI but it was an Artic. (I find the NABI's have the best air-conditioning.)

Twenty-seven again. I'm waiting this afternoon for the 1C at Warehouse Lane and Saw Mill River Road in Elmsford when a White Plains-bound 27 happens by. The 27 doesn't stop at Warehouse Lane. Unless the traffic light's red. wink

Normally I'd be getting on this Bronx-bound 1C at the Sam's Club stop in Elmsford. But tonight I'm waiting for the 14.

Wonder if this bus is garaged in Valhalla? Most of the 1Cs are out of the Yonkers garage but I've ridden the 629 many times before, though usually on a 13.

Orions with numbers below 640 are normally Valhalla buses. But they do get switched back and forth.

Guess 629 is based in Yonkers now. I was on it again this morning, on the 5-Ardsley. Didn't notice when I got on but did a double-take when I got off.

That's fairly unusual in my experience. Ride the same numbered Bee-Line bus two days in a row. But it happens.

Obviously. cool

If it is a Yonkers bus, it would be very unusual. Not that unusual if it is a Valhalla bus.

Two more-

A 1C loads up at Ardsley Square. Where's the 5? frown

Now I'm heading home! smile An Artic on a southbound 5, Saw Mill River Road near Odell Avenue.

Because Yonkers is assigned so many more buses?

When I rode the 13 out of Tarrytown, most of those buses were assigned to Valhalla. I rode 601, 602 and 610 over and over and over. They seemed to go back and forth between the 13, 14, sometimes the 27, occasionally the 11 (at night).

I rode the same 13 run nearly every morning yet I used to notice that seldom would we have the same bus two mornings in a row. But there were a handful of Orion Vs (601-605, 610, 618, 619) that seemed to get assigned repeatedly.

This photo is a bit blurry -- the bus was moving -- but I'm posting it anyway. This is a Neoplan articulated on a 5-Yonkers turning off Saw Mill River Road onto Odell Avenue in Yonkers.

I love to watch these buses take turns. Especially from inside them while they're turning!

Today I had to take Metro-North to the City and back. On the way home I walked up to Getty Square to catch the No. 2 bus.

Here's a 7 loading up at the Square. A very busy route. (Right after the 7 a 78 departed. Couldn't quite catch a shot but there were a lot of riders on the 78, including a few standees I think.

Next, the 2 came along -- with an Artic -- and here we are heading up Palisade Avenue.

Plenty of seats and nice and cool. wink

This is no great photo but I couldn't resist taking it. Orion V 613 on the Number 2 route, heading north on Park Avenue in Yonkers. Destination Executive Blvd.

I rode this same Orion many times on the No. 13. And I rode with the same operator many times on the 13 too! I said that to him and he smiled and said, "That's right!"

Very nice operator. One of the few who almost always says, "Thank you," after you pay your fare.

Thursday night I missed the 5-Yonkers at Ardsley Square so I wound up on a 6. The two routes leave me off about an equal distance from my house it's just that the 5 gets there faster. I think the 6 is usually not quite as crowded (as the photo below shows). I have sometimes had to stand on the 5 I had just missed.

It was a pleasant ride. I think I'll take the 6 more often.

Buses are cool.

Wednesday night I was waiting for a Bronx-bound 1C at the Sam's Club stop in Elmsford. There were four other people already waiting (looked like a family with Pop, Mom, son and daughter), all with small folding carts loaded with the food items they'd purchased at Sam's Club.

It was 5:30 PM frown

When the 1C came along (an Orion V) I heard 'Mom' exclaim, "Look how crowded the bus is!"

It was 5:30 PM! The family did not see this coming.

When the operator opened up 'Mom' gestured for me to get on first (which I gratefully did). The operator was sizing up the family (and the carts) and frowning. But everybody made it on. The son -- with the most heavily loaded cart -- was allowed to board through the rear door. Pop, Mom and daughter all got on through the front and came down the aisle with the carts, saying, "Excuse me, sorry, excuse me," as they made their way to the rear area. People already seated (including me), rearranged ourselves somewhat to accommodate the shoppers and....off we went.

What didn't see possible -- fitting the family and their carts on the crowded bus -- had been accomplished with hardly a ripple.

Buses are cool. smile

Below is a photo from tonight, one of the few NABIs that regularly shows up on an early evening No. 5 to Yonkers. It's at a bus stop on Nepperhan Avenue. This run gets kinda crowded. But not like the 1C on Wednesday evening!

I think my grandmother was boarding that 27 bus. Seriously, she usually takes the 27 to & from Sam's Club where she works.

I have a question. How often do you see Artics on the 1C, 5, 6, and 27 during your frequent commutes along those routes?

Tonight there was very heavy traffic on Rt. 119 westbound in Elmsford. All the buses were late, 15-25 minutes. The backup on 119 was from Elmsford Square east to the Sprain Brook Parkway overpass.

Hard to see the destination board -- this bus is heading directly into the sun -- but this is a 14-Croton inching along (near the Dunkin Donuts in Elmsford) at about 3 mph and running about 25 minutes late.

What was the cause of all the traffic? The operator on the 5 asked me the same question. Dunno. People avoiding 287?

Let's see. The 1C has an Artic assigned in the morning (which I ride a couple times a week) and one in the afternoon that arrives Elmsford Square about 5:30 PM northbound. Around the same time I see a northbound and southbound No. 5 through Elmsford Square which have Artics.

Lately I haven't been seeing Artics on the 6. Just NABIs and Orions. The one unusual bus I keep seeing on the 6 is one of the four Orion Lowfloor hybrids. Haven't been able to get a photo but that front end is unmistakeable.

As you mentioned previously, nowadays (wasn't always this way) the lone afternoon 27 I see running with an Artic is the one that arrives Elmsford Square around 5 PM.
