I just received an email from my friend Frank who was traveling tonight onboard the 5:05p Metro-North from Grand Central to Stamford and he needed to check some work related emails so he pulled out his iPod Touch which connects via a Verizon 4G MiFi device but when he was going through the list of available Wi-Fi SSIDs he noticed an SSID which he has never seen before "Metro-North-Guest". He was able to do a screen capture of the available Wi-Fi connections on his iPod Touch (See attachment) and send it to me.

So does anyone know what the story is here? Has the MTA finally started offering on-board Wi-Fi on the LIRR and MNR? and no he didn't connect to it just in case it was a hacker.

That's a bit farfetched there. How can there be Wi-Fi on a train, especially if you're underground? I'd suggest you look into the Metro-North site, and try to confirm it first.

@Jan It's not farfetched, Amtrak runs Wi-Fi on all of their Acela Express trains from Boston to Washington D.C. and I believe some of their Northeast Corridor trains also have Wi-Fi which operates from the train's router to cell phone towers along the entire route and BART in Northern California has Wi-Fi on their trains. New Jersey Transit has also said they are looking into offering on-board Wi-FI.

As far as checking MTA.info that was the first thing I did and only found a press release that they were looking into which makes me wonder if they are just doing beta test of the network.
