Cause they are old and they have to be replaced with something. I love the old subway cars but change has to come sooner or later and this is the change. But be glad for one thing, the R32's and the R42's are going to be around for a few more years with the scrapping of the R44's, so you can keep on enjoying them for a little while longer.

The Transit Museum will run the Low-V's this summer, can't get much older than that and run on revenue track.
(Q-Types maybe but they can not carry passengers in the subway, only elevated)

They were gate cars before they were converted to Q types.

I thought that all of the R32's were already phased out of the system already.

They're apparently going to be around for a while with the demise of the R44. I can't wait until they turn 50 and are in service!

So, if I'm understanding this right, the (E) and (F) are taking on new, specialized R160s so that the R160s they alrady have are being transferred to the (R), which, along with the (F), is transferring some of its R46s to Piktin/207th St Yard for service on the (A), which is retiring its R44s. Intersting.

Also, I wish they would take the new R160s coming in send them to Piktin Yard (why to nuke R44s of course) or Concourse Yard (and send some R68s for service on the (A)/(C) ) for service on the (A) or (D) or something. But I know there's this R160 training process and I'm just Foaming at the moment so don't take me seriously.

There is only one 'specialized' R160B set, that's on the E. But other than that new trains are arriving to Jamaica yard can push off more R46 trains to the A line.

It makes more sense to just make the A all R46s because they are already there and means fewer train types to maintain.

Eventually that's whats going to happen. It may even be down the line that the tech trains push the R68s onto the A and the B/D begin to receive some 160s when the 46s are ready to go (the 32s and 44s will be gone by then).

Although maybe later than originally thought. Walder's Capital Plan calls for evaluating equipment for longevity instead of just replacing it on a cycle. In other words, and for example, the R32 could be the last to go and they could be around for another 10 or so years.

Ha! How's that for rubbing it in to the old tech haters? That would be awesome if the R32s pushed 60 years or such. The carbodies can last long, but they'll need to keep those trucks in shape.

I would like to know this... I have not seen an F R46 in quite a while. Seems like the R is not running any R160's lately either. Although the Joe Korner datasheet still says both F and R are running R46 and R160:

not sure how up to date is that data sheet but I've seen no R46's on the F from right after the changes that ended the V! Also there are at least 2 R160's on the R but maybe 3! All of the R160's ordered are here and in service so if there are any more fleet changes it would be car/yard changes of fleet that they already have! The mta does know they are short on more new needed fleet for the J/Z and A/C lines... (R179)

The F is all R160's. Any complaints and comments, feel free to email the MTA.
