I've noticed an uptown 4 train at Union Sq between say 8:10 and 8:25 in the weekday morning (I haven't noted the specific time), that is decidedly less crowded than any other uptown express train. One time, I saw it at Grand Central with almost no standees!

Is there 1 that's turned at South Ferry or perhaps starts elsewhere further up the line?

There's one (4) that goes down to Bowling Green only, but he don't come back up that early.

Do you think that they should continue to "Short turn" some (4)s & (5)s at Bowling Green during rushhours only? This may be a good way to help ease the crowding.

There are a few (4) and (5) (more fives tho) that only go down to Bowling Green, but thats cause of limited capacity in Brooklyn, there's only one IRT yard out there now, remember that. Think of them as those Kings Hwy F's. There are also two 5's that start at Bowling Green for the PM rush, those are AM crews that used to go down there out of service around 3ish, but now go in service and are short turned. The reason its two is because two whole trains can fit inside of that loop.

If you mean Brooklyn Bridge... impossible, too much service on the 6. And there are no more short turned 4's in the AMs and there are 3 on the 5.

The 4 can be surprising. It will appear as randomly empty at times...

Well, sometimes they run extra trains out of Utica (when an earlier interval was abandoned) that follows a regular interval. Also earlier problems often result in short turned trains (and it doesnt take much, a delay as little as 5 mins can result in a train going around the loop instead of through to Brooklyn, remember most of the riders in the AM are off the train by Bowling Green).
