I noticed this morning the new cars on the R line at Forest Hills. Unbelievable -- this is one of the most crowded trains and the E/F too, and they are using cars with less room. Why?

If you mean the R160, they have more room per full length train, and the doors are wider to facilitate ingress/egress

I don't know what number it is called but I do know these new trains have 43 seats, vs. 75 and 6 seats on a bench with a pole in the middle so when a 7th person could fit, one can't due to the pole. These are the same trains on the E/F line that now accommodate less people, They are more crowded.

The number for the new trains is the R160, vs. the older R46s that were used on the F and R lines. While there were more seats on the older cars, they were 75 feet long vs. the 60-foot new cars. A full-length train is 600'. Both trains have 4 doors per car, so an 8-car train of R46s would have 32 doors while a 10-car train of R160s has 40 doors. This makes it easier for passengers to get on and off the train.

Also, the R46s have 70 or 76 seats per car (depending on the type of car) while the R160s have 42 or 44 seats per car (depending on the type of car). So in an 8-car train of R46s you will have 584 seats (4 cars with 70 and 4 cars with 76), while in a 10-car train of R160s you will have 432 seats (4 cars with 42 and 6 cars with 44). So while it is true that a train of R46s has more seats, a train of R160s has more standing room (the seats take up less space) to balance out the load. Also, a newer train has more doors to make boarding time faster.

I camped out at Forest Hills yesterday awaiting an R160 (R) Train. I was waititng 40 minutes and then three sets came up in a row. Although I first saw the R160 (R) on Saturday April 3rd, two in a row, totally unexpected and I though it was a rerouted (F) train or something.... I was in car #9317.

8 Car Full Length Trains do SEAT more customers sure but carry less at crush load. The side seat design and bigger doors allow more standees so technically the 10 car R160 carries more then 8 car R46 at crush load.

i would not think the r160 would be on the R so fast but there are really coming from the F line...for some reason over the weekend the F had many of the R line r46's and the R now has a few of the F line R160's...These R160's are not even fully programmed for the R line...but NYCTSubwayScoop told me "Those cars are just in the 'burn in' phase of testing. Don't expect there to be R160's on R line,You will see more R160s on E and F by the time this current order of cars arrives."

The R is running the R160 cars now? I'm surprised...

I saw one today again..it reminds me of what happened to the E and F...When the E was almost Full of R160's they stop and started putting them on the F then when the F became 50-50 mix of R160's and R46's then the E became all R160 now with the F almost all R160 they have stopped adding more and now the R has like 3sets R160's from the F...maybe the R will see more R160's then the F will be all R160 with the R being 50-50 R160's and R46's?

A tweet from NYCT said not to expect the R160 on the R permanently and that they were first all headed for the E & F.

Those R160s are not burn testing, they are in revenue service on the R so that tweet might be some misinformation. I would expect R160s to stay on the R for a good while but the numbers of R160s on the F and R lines are both subject to change.

Thx..R32_3348
I was thinking the same as you!...I have been seeing more R46's on the F than before+ All the R160's on the R ..The FIND are all reading F train to C.I. or 179st.

I was impressed to see that the R160's made it to the R line.

I saw3 and rode on 2 R160 R trains today....with their FIND working! I wonder if the MTA is trying to get more R46's over the the A line to get all the R44's off daily service! I also saw another new set of R160 in testing....looks like new R160's are on the F while the F is transferring a little bit older R160's to the R?

There is at least two cars with folding seats on the E. You can tell by the strange center poles that spilt in two and the warning signs that you are being video taped.
They will not fold up the seats until summer starts when loadings are lower, that's when the test will begin.

I think that's what they're doing putting R160s on R, and sending some R46 to replace R44s from A. Now I've been seeing some empty R44s going uptown, so that's a sign for retirement.

Putting the good R44's in storage and or getting rid of the bad ones off the A line seems to be major now..

I read in the of the city's free news papers yesterday that the MTA is trying to buy more cars, not sure if its more R160's or R179's

All of the R44 cars are going to be stored, weather they are good or bad.as for buying new cars,i don't know if they can
currently with their budget problems.

The A line will likely get new cars in a few years.for now,the
R44(soon to be retired) and the R46 are on the A line.

The R46's are great roomy trains! A great fit on the A and maybe later C lines...

Anyone know car numbers on some of these SRO R160 trains? I'd like to keep an eye out and try to see one!
