It does, except for this weekend, the (G) is not running at all and (G) stations will be closed.

Then next week (Monday January 18th to Friday January 22d 10:30PM to 5:00AM) (G) stations are open but the (G) runs in two sections: 71st Avenue-Continental Avenue to Bedford-Nostrand Avenues and Bedford-Nostrand Avenues to Church Avenue as work along the Brooklyn-Queens Crosstown Line continues..

The Forest Hills - Bedford Nostrand Avenues section operates every Half-Hour:

Northbound (G):
:19 and :49 after the hour

Southbound (G)
:35 and :05 after the hour

Apparently, Bedford-Nostrand Aveues - Kensington section is normal every twenty minutes.

I got on the G shuttle bus on Broadway at around 4:40 and I got to Queens Plaza at around 5. It was pretty fast. However, I heard that the people I was with got on an artic right after that, which took almost an hour to get to Jay.

No fun tryin to navigate an artic through Greenpoint and Bed Stuy and Fort Greene lol

They should just use RTS and hybrids and orions for shuttle bus ops like this where tight streets are involved

I rode the G shuttle bus last night. It was a smooth ride from Jay Street to Washington Ave on the NG.

Maybe they're secretly trial testing replacing the G with a bus route.

This weekend the G shuttle bus will run between Jay St-Boro Hall stop to 21 Street-Queensbridge stop due to the E train running via 63 Street. Stops on 53rd Street will be closed during the weekend. This weekend only the R train will be stopping at Queens Plaza during daytime hours only and during late nights the station will be closed. Hope you plan extra time this weekend if you take the G train and planning to go to Queens.

Does this mean that the E will run entirely local into Manhattan? And will it run along 8 Av until W. 4 St or will it run along 6 Av after 5 Av-53 St like a few months back? I didn't receive any emails yet so I hope service is normal

I think the (E) is terminating at 34th St-6th Av because I saw an advisory stating that the (D) is running local along 6th Avenue. As for Queens, I think the (E) is still running express with the (F).

They tweet photos of the work they perform. It's a nice addition and looks legit to me. In regards to shutting a line to replace track, certainly that section of the line needs to be shut at minimum and then they perform other work along the line as well, so shutting down the line makes sense as long as they get the maximum benefit of the work while the line is out.

Yeah I guess that's true. Its not like they're shutting down a major line like Lex or 7 Av in Manhattan or QB or B'way. They need to quit with the 7 train though...sheesh.

The thing with the 7 though is that they have no other time to do this kind of work, since the spring-fall months bring in the baseball season and no major work like this can be done without disrupting the commutes of stadium-goers. They don't have a choice.

with all these alternatives, the MTA doesnt need the (G) train. the (G) is like a shuttle but with many stops! now thats ridiculous. that line is a waste of money and Cars. (its only 6 full R46 trainset and a half R46 train set out of the yard). i think the (G) should be eliminated...also the line doesnt have high ridership.

By that logic, we shoudn't have any shuttles. The G is an important link between Bed-Stuy/Williamsbug and Downtown Brooklyn, as well north to Long Island City. Buses coming from those areas would be packed without the G train. It would be like near 3rd Avenue in the Bronx, where eliminating the 8 train causes buses to be crowded coming from this area to other subway lines.

Which 8 train? And YES the G needs to be GONE! Its a phantom train to begin with and it seems to have NO ridership. I couldn't picture it as being packed during rush hrs. Never.

The 8 was the line that ran on the IRT Third Avenue Line in the Bronx, until April 29, 1973. I don't think that the number 8 was put on the rollsigns on the cars.
As for the G, what I'm saying is that you would be leaving that section of Bed-Stuy without train service, causing nearby routes like the B38, B48, and B54 to become overcrowded. Don't forget that the G was supposed to be a partial alternative to the discontinued MJ on the demolished BMT Myrtle Avenue Line, so you would be using bus service to replace 2 subway lines. Plus, what would you do with the abandoned subway tunnel once service was discontinued?

I thought about that...but I honestly don't have a plan for that one lol...but it would be better off as some sort of shuttle.

It is. In fact, they need at least 1 additional train in the 8-9am slot in the morning rush, maybe 2.

Yes, the shuttle buses are jam packed. The G is needed, and as the portion of Brooklyn that's nearest Manhattan (i.e. the G's service territory) continues to grow, the G will be needed even more.

Bus routes will not replace it. Anybody familiar with the combination of streets that the G follows will tell you that you cannot replace it with a bus route of the same efficiency. The closest comparison would be the B62, and that route was so bad (the B61 that is), it needed to be split up.

Well this is the case with any area that only has buses and no trains...with only buses its a disaster, but once the train comes along, ridership is super low.

Not necessarily. For example, next to the M15, the B46 has the most ridership of any NYC bus route. If there was a Utica Avenue subway built, I'm sure ridership would grow to that of an average subway line. Of course, this is an extreme example. In many cases, however, the new line gets low ridership, at least at first.
The service is suited to the ridership. In the MTA's thinking, the G didn't have enough ridership for an 8 car train, so they made it a 6 car train, (and cut it to 4 cars once the V came in).
During off-peak hours, many lines do have low ridership. I have seen half-empty M15s pass by during midday, reflecting what the Second Avenue Subway would be like at that time of day. Yet the most of the lines are truly needed in rush hour, where if the line was discontinued, the buses above (or below) would be full to capacity and bypassing stops full of people.

I don't know who said the G is empty...that is a complete and utter lie. The G gets a lot of ridership throughout the day, even though it is a 4-car 300' train half the size of a normal train. It is the only train to go directly from Brooklyn to Queens and is a very useful transit link. I have been on SRO G trains during rush hour and midday, and that ridership must carry on into the evening too. The line also gets decent ridership on weekends too.

The schoolkids horde the line in the afternoon. It is a line that TA will eventually try to OPTO full-time instead of just on weekends.

My only OPTO complaint is that dwell time increases in stations and ultimately the trip. So if you are going 15 stops, it starts to feel like it is taking making longer. Plus if a non-OPTO train is behind an OPTO train, the non-OPTO train is delayed.

The G runs alone most of its route, and on weekends thats exactly what happens... an OPTO G sandwiched between F's. TA doesnt really care about the couple minutes of runtime added, the cost savings are significant not having second 60k a year employee on board in the last car. While a short, quick line, thats why they been trying to push for that on the 7 and L - few/none curved stations (sight lines down the whole train) and potentially millions of dollars saved by redeploying conductors elsewhere (they still got to pay em but the savings are realized by the resulting hiring freeze as they retire). Not saying they would do it in the peak, but certainately at night (in the case of the 7) and nights/weekends (for the L).

Yes its very useful on weekends when trying to access Queens Mall & other places along Queens...so it acts like a nice high-profile shuttle train of some sort.

Except even by the MTA's own admission, the G ran on QB 3 weekends last year (or something close)
