That long-awaited system has finally made its debut at Longwood Av on the (6). Its not up around the clock yet, but at least its up.

Great news, though I feel bad for our letter-train riding friends, who have to wait until 2014 at the earliest for such advanced technology.

Brook Avenue is now under testing, and Longwood is now working around the clock.

Best bet is to go to Longwood Av. Its interesting that they started on the (6) I thought the (1) would be the easiest to implement being that its 2 tracks north of 96th (M track isnt used for service) like the L. Got two terminals on the 6, and M track is used for service during the weekdays.

On a side note... demographically speaking (you know they care about that), Longwood, E149th, etc are in downtrodden areas compared to 103rd-125th on the 1 line. Other then the article last month featuring Walder saying they will start the pilot by the end of last month (not bad for MTA, about a week late), I havent seen a peep about this pilot in any paper.

I'd really like to see this... but I can't really understand why they picked that area. Not that many people use those stations.

Good question but its the least used stations on the 6. I Rather see it used from Phelam bay to parkchester and then expand it, imo.

Its on the L in a unrelated project - CBTC. The concept arrived on that line a few years back already. It works well at every station along the line. What is interesting about this pilot is the public assumed that it would come to the rest of the subway lines much sooner than it has. It was touted then that the technology was coming "soon" to the numbered lines. They were only in the process of installing the program monitors when I got hired in 2006.

Article Here

The signs are currently at 5 stations in the Bronx: Brook Avenue, Cypress Avenue, E.143rd Street-St. Mary's Street, E. 149th Street and Longwood Avenue. These stations were the first stations where the ATS and PA/CIS systems were completed, so these stations will enjoy the new signs first. The signs will rollout on the rest of the IRT by the end of March 2011 (a little over a year from now), with the exceptions of the 7, and the 2/5 in the Bronx.

I saw the report on CBS 2 News on Christmas Eve and ever since, I've been trying to catch glimpses of the clocks when I'm on the 6. I must say the bits that I see seem to be working. It tends to say "System under Test" or something like that and it seems to show when the train is arriving cause the "6 Pelham Bay Park" is lit a different color than the bottom one. I think this is going to be great and I can't wait till they take it further up the line and I can really use it for myself.

Happy New Years everybody!!!

Thanks for the update! The real effects should be felt as it moves north to Parkchester and Pelham Bay Park, and south to the major stations on the Lexington Ave. line.

Here's a question: Would they put them at Pelham Bay Park to let passengers know when the train is leaving?

The monitors are installed at most A divison stations, including some terminals. Yes, they are at Pelham.

Hunts Point Av has been turned on (not working but the guys were out there today), interesting to see that one as its the first place where information on two tracks (express and local trains) needs to be displayed

Middletown Road arrival signs were working on both the uptown and downtown sides as of 4:30am today. Somewhat depressing to see 27 minutes between (6) trains; shouldn't they be on 20 minute headaways? Anyway, I didn't see any working from Longwood Ave(the last one working) through Middletown Road. Not sure if Buhre or Pelham Bay Park are activated as I got off at Middletown. Progress people!

Cool, I dont think they'll be at or south of Parkchester for a while, they started the rehab for all those stations now. There is no canopy at Whitlock/Morrison in both directions.

New signs at Middletown Rd - http://twitpic.com/10dpal
New signs at Buhre Ave - http://twitpic.com/10dt0w

That makes 7 stations with the new signs.

TwoTimer is correct. Whitlock Avenue and Morrison Avenue-Soundview are scheduled to close at 5:00am Monday February 8th for station rehabilitations.

The MTA service advisory is saying unti 5:00am Monday September 13th. Sounds like this will be the final week for photo ops and trainspotting at Whitlock Avenue until the end of summer.

Looking forward to updates as the system is deployed. I'm the person you hear voicing the announcements. I recorded probably close to 1,000 announcements, most only a word or two. The system constructs the sentences from these fragments. So far I've only seen and heard the system via YouTube videos.

Done, and done! All those who wish to be updated on the status of these timers need only look at the top of the 4/5/6 forum. If the program expands to further lines, then I'll sticky it in the Rider's Platform. Till then, enjoy!

Except the 2 north of 149-GC. Work isnt done there yet and ATS is not functional north of 3Av.

Today they started working on Astor Pl and Canal St. Interesting to note that none of the gap stations on the 6 line in the Bronx (3Av, Hunts Pt, Parkchester, West Sq, Pelham) are online. Another interesting point is once functional, Astor/Canal will show info on (4)s and (5)s as well when they are running local, a small milestone for the system.

I've observed that the system has a lot of glitches, going from 2 minutes to 22 minutes at the blink of an eye. But it's still useful, to some extent. The correct times outnumber the incorrect ones.

Its still in testing, and also those gaps in the system (some places online, other places not) may play a role there. Its subject to the same kinks and faults that occur inherently in ATS, since its based solely on what ATS sees and does.

Well one of its tenets was to provide the information to update the network to the more newer systems around the country and around the world. The other idea was so people wouldnt look out over the tracks looking for trains. Most of the cuts affect stations that currently doesnt have the technology (in the B division). For instance, the 6 line will barely change at all, save fewer evening trains (right now headways are at 10 minutes until almost midnite, they used to be 15 minutes after 11:15ish before the expanded service took effect). Most of the cuts on the numbered lines involve service on the 1 line, there is no word if they were taken out or not.

They said the end of next year it will be systemwide, no info on the order of what areas coming online, all I know is the areas on the (2)(5) north of 3rd Av-149 will be the last to come on along with (1) South Ferry, the only revenue areas without ATS at this time.

well everything is still in the testing phase (on some days, off on others), even the stuff on the 6 line. when i say "are up", i just mean i spotted them working at that particular moment going by (worked the 4 this week), i don't mean its done and will be up 24/7. not even the stuff on the 6 line are up 24/7 and, i have yet to see a gap station go online anywhere.

More often than not, they're up (about 80% of the time at most stations at least). They are hooking up 68th street at the moment, saw the contractors bringing power to the display board late last night on my last trip.

Four stations in Brooklyn (Bergen St., Eastern Pkwy-Brooklyn Museum, Nostrand Av, and Kingston Av) have the PA/CIS screens online now. Also, St. Lawrence Ave. now has these signs along with 3 other Pelham line stations that are still unidentified. Here is the updated list:

(1) None
(2) Bergen St., Eastern Pkwy-Brooklyn Museum, Nostrand Av, Kingston Av
(White Plains Rd. stations will get signs by November 2011 after signal work)
(3) Bergen St., Eastern Pkwy-Brooklyn Museum, Nostrand Av, Kingston Av
(4) None
(5) None (White Plains Rd. stations will get signs by November 2011 after signal work; Dyre line stations will not get until 2016)
(6) Buhre Ave., Middletown Rd., Longwood Ave., E. 149th St., E. 143rd St., Cypress Ave., Brook Ave., St. Lawrence Ave.
(7) None (stations will not get signs until 2016 after CBTC and PA/CIS work)

Here is a list of the stations that have the signs on a line-by-line basis, which is more convenient to keep track of. At the end of each line is the stations on the line with screens out of the total stations on the line.

The Bronx
Broadway/7th Ave. Line (1) - None (0/3) (Marble Hill = Manhattan)
Jerome Line (4) - None (0/14)
White Plains Road/Dyre Ave. Line (2)(5) - None (White Plains Rd. stations will get signs by November 2011 after signal work; Dyre line stations will not get until 2016)
Pelham Line (6) - Buhre Ave., Middletown Rd., Longwood Ave., E. 149th St., E. 143rd St., Cypress Ave., Brook Ave., St. Lawrence Ave. (11/18, 8 listed)

Brooklyn
Brooklyn Mainline - Bergen St., Eastern Pkwy-Brooklyn Museum (2/9)
Livonia Line (3)(4) - Nostrand Ave., Kingston Ave. (2/10)
Nostrand Ave. Line (2)(5) - None (0/7)

Manhattan
Broadway/7th Ave. Line (1)(2)(3) - None (0/43) (Marble Hill = Manhattan)
Lexington Ave. Line (4)(5)(6) - None (0/23)
42nd St. Line (7) - None (stations will not get signs until 2016 after CBTC and PA/CIS work)
42nd St. Crosstown (S) - None (0/2)

Queens
Flushing Line - None (stations will not get signs until 2016 after CBTC and PA/CIS work)

Stations with the new screens: 15/152 (12 listed - not counting WPR, Dyre & Flushing lines)

Also, it would make sense for a mod to move this to the General Subway forum because it's now systemwide instead of just on the Pelham line.

It seems kind of random the way it's being rolled out although you could speculate that the first stations on the Bronx 6 were low risk due to ridership and maybe other factors, but some of the Brooklyn stations are busy...

I'm sure that there's a reason to the rhyme, I just can't figure out what it is.

Its kinda obvious why Manhattan is last, Ive seen some sporadic testing at Astor Pl, as I said earlier they were hooking up 68th this week but that's just bringing power to the display device still a long way to go there. The other thing i wonder is if the money is there to complete the rollout, or is there a piece that is a part of a still unfunded future capital plan...

The screens in the stations go online when the installation of ATS and PA/CIS installation is completed. So it's just rolled out on a basis of which stations have the installation finished first. Also, this was already funded by the 2000-2004 Capital Program so all A Division stations will have these new screens, with the exceptions of the White Plains Rd. (needs signal modernization), Dyre Ave. (signal modernization), and Flushing (ATS/CBTC) lines.

I used the 6 yesterday and both Astor Pl. and Canal St. were working in both directions. So right now, every Pelham Line local station, Astor Pl., Bleecker St. and 157th St. on the 1 have the signs.

I see installation going on in the local 6 stations in the UES too. I wonder where exactly the one at Spring St is at... it must be on the entry side of the turnstyle where I cant see it when coming into the station.

Whitlock Avenue and Morrison-Soundview will probably receive them when work is finished. Westchester Square has them, though.

Newkirk Avenue on the Nostrand Avenue line has the system up and running. I'm not sure about the other stations on the line, though. Do these boards account for General Orders/Construction ? I would imagine so, since I saw the board today and it correctly announced the (5) running in the place of the (2).

Yeah, announcements can be programmed into them for long term GOs (like station closures or alternate service). But it doesn't account for delays just yet, and the times are approximate (don't pay attention to anything beyond the 2nd train), it doesn't quite know what to do if a train isn't moving (the arrival time just won't move either just like the train).

The board at Franklin Avenue on the Manhattan-Bound side appears to work just fine, but the Flatbush/New Lots-Bound side still seems to have a few kinks. For starters, when I saw the board, it seemed to exclude(2) trains going to Flatbush Avenue. Also, the train arrival times were wrong. But it said 'System Under Test, so I guess it's excuseable. Sterling Street also has the boards up and it's looking good!

Yes i noticed the manhattan bound side is also off.i think the signs at franklin might be a little different than at other stations. They are wider and their font is different. The sign at the turnstiles is just like any other station.Oh and the(2) to Flatbush is always there. However im not sure.I think if its more than 10 min away it might not show. This is what I have noticed.Announcements are just fine by the way.

Well we figured those would be the hardest to figure out with the dual tracks, I also want to see how it handles last minute service changes (like 2 trains routed to the express or 4 trains to the local for instance). These gap stations were the last to get going, Hunts Pt (6) was operative as of last night (when I went thru there on the way home). Hoyt street also will get going soon they turned the signs on but it wasnt broadcasting any info. Also at Franklin its really the first station where there's constantly a train arriving, and you know it announces the train approaching the station but when its in the station is something else.

None of the stations are fully 100% functional, its all in a test stage. There is no guarantee any of the above stations will be on when you go through there. It is purely hit and miss, the list is merely a survey of stations where the signs were spotted working at some point.

I noticed at Franklin Avenue that the board was turned off but actual announcements of arriving trains were still playing. I noticed sometimes Eastern Parkway would have its train arrival times replaced with a clock. Sterling Street, as far as I know, consistenly has the train arrival times posted. About Eastern Pkwy and Sterling St though, I only see them briefly passing by on the train. My home station Beverly Road isn't set up yet. cry The board on the Flatbush Av-bound platfrom hasn't even been unwrapped yet. Anyone know why certain stations get boards set up before others? Wouldn't it be logical to start at a terminal and go up from there?

It' nice the Pelham Line has lots of countdown clocks set up. Heck, just about every station still open (excluding Pelham Bay Park and Parkchester)have clocks up and running.

In Brooklyn, I saw the board at President Street operating. I also saw the board on the Manhattan-Bound pltform at Winthrop St turned on. Unlike the board at President St, the board at Winthrop St just said "Data display - system test " and randomly showed flashing colors, so I think it was turned on not long before I came. Note that I only saw both boards passing by on the train, coming home from school, so their conditions may have changed. Finally, I have no idea whether Hoyt St-Fulton Mall's countdown clock is set up.

Morrison and Whitlock were working, but have since went offline due to major renovation at those stations. Parkchester's was never installed with pending renovation there. In the early days of the renovations, one could still see Morrison and Whitlock's clocks up and working as designed even though the station was closed.

I would like to know myself why the boards on the (A) and (C) lines are different from the boards on the IRT. Also, President Street and Grand Army Plaza in Brooklyn have countodwn clocks activated. I saw them today traveling home from school. I was up in the Bronx the other day and I noticed 138th St-Grand Concourse, or at least the Manhattan-Bound platform, has a countdoswn clock set up.

President/GAP have been there for quite some time. The IRT boards get their information from ATS, which includes which numbered line is coming next. It even knows when non-revenue equipment is next, not putting up arrival time for that but instead making a 'stand away from the platform' announcement. Its more sophisticated (but many times more expensive) than whats in the IND.

The boards over in the IND was a pilot that used existing technology (instead of overhauling the signals and installing new wiring and computers, etc at a cost of nearly a billion now), but the system does not know which train is coming, but merely that something is coming based on the activated track circuit. That may be sufficient being that many parts of the B division only has one line running on any particular track.

That would be cool for non-revenue."The next Maintenance train to New lots avenue will arrive in...".

President St and Grand Army Plaza, as already stated, are up and running consistently. The board at Winthrop St was turned off yesterday, I don't think it's gotten to the actual countdown clock phase yet.

No, but they did just install a couple rather large boards upstairs at 59st on the (6) plat. It appears it will have information for all the Lex lines.

I have a question. Why would Marble Hill have train arrival times in comparison to the rest of the line?

Marble Hill, while on the other side of the Broadway Bridge is technically part of Manhattan (even though geographically speaking it's in the Bronx). Its the fingernail of high end Manhattan-like living that snakes along the Harlem River to where it meets the Hudson (Spuyten Duyvil and Riverdale makes up the rest of that finger lol). If that was what ur asking as to why he's separating that station from the rest of the Bx. Its funny tho, cause at that 225th St station, Manhattan lies on the west side of Broadway going up that small side street along the river, while the Bronx is on the east side of Broadway going down towards the Target.

On a note that's more on topic, Parkchester won't get them until station work is complete in October when the southbound opens back up for business.

That's what I figured. I would use the "Marble Hill is Manhattan" theory, but then again, what about stops in Inwood and Washington Heights? My assumption is it has something to do with the Metro-North connection. You probably get a large amount of Riverdale and above commmuters.

Now he divides it up by borough, but as we have figured out there's no real rhyme or reason for the order of stations (major political pull stations such as 77th street on the 6 doesn't have them yet, and we know that's the station the Mayor uses to go to work).

I really feel those commuters up the hill from 225th street prefer their nice comfy seat on a local Metro North train then squeezing into a (1), most of them can afford it. I don't really see the point in dividing it up by borough, its the total number of available stations that's the goal, by TA's standards. We know not all IRT stations are available yet, but its the ones that are we're concerned about. I prefer to look at it by section, which he has it, and leave the boroughs out of it entirely.

For instance, the Pelham line is complete, except for Parkchester, which isn't done yet because of station rehab there (other stations currently in rehab and those about to go into rehab had it prior to their closing).

I'm not even sure if ATS is functional in that area at all (I'll ask next time I chat with the ATD or TD at GC), and it may never be, a cheaper option probably is that stuff they doing over on the A/C lines in upper Manhattan. Its not like something other than the shuttle is stopping there, lol.

Marble Hill is considered part of Manhattan, even though it's in the Bronx.

I have the two shuttle stations factored into the total station count.

BTW, the only reason I have it organized by borough is for organizational purposes, as opposed to listing each line in alphabetical order. I feel that it makes it slightly easier to find a certain line you might be looking up information on.

So that leaves 161st and 149st heavy and important use stations. On the 4.
Did you ever find out if the 42nd S will get PA/CIS work done.

I wonder where they will put the ones at 149-GC. I dont recall any installation downstairs yet, and the old ones are upstairs still that just show time and date. Should be a couple on that mezzanine level, the 2/5 info on one between the two staircases leading downstairs to the WPL, and the 4 info on the other between the staircases leading up to the Jerome line, along with those on the platforms themselves. They should also be on that upper mezzanine that joins up both island plats (one for the 4, the other the 2/5).

Thanks for the update, 3348. As for the functionality of these clocks, I can say that they still have some work to be done. They're only about a minute or two off.

I will say that my experience has been about the same. Maybe a one or two minute differential on the arrival times. This is mostly due to the intangibles of Dispatchers holding trains and spacing of trains.

The time arrival information is determined by the positioning of the train. Since the train cannot be linked to GPS to better track the time, they rely on a series of gates that the train passes through to guesstimate the arrival time of the train.

Hopefully they will improve or perfect this system in due time.

They are a godsend; although I remember some NYCT employees throwing out stuff like they are not necessary, that the next train will arrive when it arrives and garbage like that. It is such a pleasure, for exmple, riding the tube in London or the metgro in Paris or the U Bahn in Berlin to know when the next train is due. Why it took NYC so long to realize how valuable this information is remains one of the great mysteries of life.

Why can't they roll this out at the express stations where there is a higher volume of local riders? Just display it for the 6 only. I typically ride from Union Sq to GCT and tend to take the local because it is less crowded and I am completely shut out of this program.

Is Mott Ave Up and running? And Roku when you get the chance to this thread should be moved to Rider's Platform to be covered the whole IRT not just the Lex lines.

I'll add Gun Hill Rd. (5) and the ones on the WPR line when they're past the initial testing phase. Also, does anyone know if Morrison Ave. - Soundview and Whitlock Ave. have the boards up yet? I haven't been up that way since those stations reopened. Also, I noticed on Friday that they have the big boards (width of 4 lines instead of 2) up at 86th St. on the (4) (5) (6) installed, but they're not on yet.

I don't believe Morrison Avenue and Whitlock have the systems up yet. I'll try to get a better look.

The sign is turned on at the Morris Park (5) station on the Dyre Ave line. Currently it states the correct current time and "No train data available".
