R110A>R142

The R142 looks so dull. It has a nice ride but I hate periwinkle

The R110A cars are stored in the 239 Street yard in The Bronx.

The R142 are more reliable than the R142A. They run on 3 IRT lines.

No, Kawasaki didn't want to build more cars so BBD took up the majority of the contract. Just because BBD took the larger order doesn't mean they are better. So don't assume.
Plus I think recently, a few years ago, the R142's had to be 'fixed up'. So some R142A's from the 4 and 6 trains had to run on the 2 and 5 lines. R62A's went to the 4 to fill in for the R142A given up to the 2/5.

I didn't assume, I just like the R142 better...

So is there any recent news about the R188?

There will not be any more "recent" news about the R188. They will first finish the R160 order, and then in a few months-a year you'll start hearing stuff about the R179. A few months after THAT you'll be hearing things about the R188.

The whole R188 thing is stupid. Maybe the Six could give the Seven about 5 sets of R142A, and in vice versa.

What good would that do?

What good is sending the 7 only 5 sets? The 7 is isolated and needs to be one train type only. That's why it has to be an entire fleet swap.
And they need to have 11-car trains. You can't give the 7 10-car trains. I believe the R188's are just single cars to be inserted into an R142A set to make them 11-car trains.

During a period in 2003 the 7 ran Redbirds and R62a's

Because the R62A's [displaced from the mainline] were in the process of being delivered to the 7 line to retire the redbirds.
I don't quite understand what via101Av meant by his comment, but it seems like he only wants a small number of R142A's on the 7, which is not the same as your example of the 7 fleet in 2007.

The R188 order is for 23 cars. The (7) runs 32 trains (plus probably a few spares). Where will the 11th car come from for the other 9 or so trains? Are there R142 or R142A singles that could be used?

No, all the R142/a's came in 5-car sets. They would have to break up a set to make one a 6-car train, but leave behind 4 unusable cars. This is why when R142a's are moved to the 7, they will need an additional trailer car to insert into a 10-car train.
They will need to buy a few more of those R188 cars, it doesn't make sense to stop buying them after 23 cars.

So the R188 are just upgraded R142A's?

He just meant an updated car.

I'm not sure if they fixed the problems yet, but yes, it had to do with 3rd rail power issues or something along the lines of the R142/As not getting enough power from the third rail.

No, since there's not going to be any new news about the R188 for at least the next 6 months to next year. They're still designing the R179, and we don't know if that order will go through (though it probably will, as new car orders usually do).

^ This isn't them being late, everything take time. The MTA hasn't passed any deadlines or anything.

Anyway, the original poster's information may be outdated as the MTA has changed its plans. I thought this was brought up somewhere else on the forums but I decided to bring it up on the R188 thread. This is from the MTA 2010-2014 Capital Plan, while all the old information we were speculating on was from the 2008-2013 plan (which was never passed and is now a thing of the past).

"The PROPOSED 2010-2014 Capital Program - $1.333 billion
New York City Transit proposes to invest $1.333 billion for 463 new rail cars as part of the 2010-
2014 Capital Program. This allows for the purchase of 340 replacement railcars for the B
Division and the purchase of 123 fleet expansion railcars for the A Division. These cars are
needed to accommodate service growth on the Flushing and Broadway/7th Ave. lines. In
addition, budgeted elsewhere is the purchase of 80 replacement cars for the Staten Island
Railway (which operates with B Division equipment).
The B Division replacement project and the SIR replacement project are to replace the R44 car
fleet, which has been in service since 1973/4. These cars will be in excess of 40 years old
when ultimately retired. While this fleet operates reliably today, the projected maintenance
costs going forward --as well as the opportunity to further extend the operating efficiencies and
customer benefits enjoyed by new technology cars-- argue for replacement.
Fleet expansion on the Flushing #7 line of the A Division is in conjunction with the new
technology signal upgrade and an extension to the west side of Manhattan now underway on
that line; additionally, the expansion is slated to allow service increases for the Broadway/7th
Avenue 1 2 3 line services. This expansion fleet will address ridership increases projected in
these corridors by providing additional off-peak and longer periods of peak service."

Basically, this means the R188 order will only be composed of 123 cars. I assume 33 of these cars will be for the 7, leaving the other 90 cars for the 1/2/3 lines. This means that the 1, 2, 3, and 7 lines will all have 3 trains added to them; for the 7, this will meet the additional trains required when the line is extended to Javits Center.

I believe the plan is to add trains to the (2)(3), but not the (1) as it already has very low headways. Also in the capital plan is a suggestion that CBTC will becoming to the 7 Av express (2)(3) express track (as well as Queens Blvd).
