I'm sure the second system expansion planned by the MTA long ago involved building a lot of routes in Queens and Brooklyn. There are tons of unused tunnels, station shells, and tracks all meant to be starting points for an expansion. Has anyone ever thought of the Franklin Avenue shuttle as a possible crosstown line if extended? Right now, there seems to be an abundance of lines cutting the area between Queens and Brooklyn horizontally, and only a single line that runs vertically. The Franklin Avenue shuttle, being directly connected to the Brighton line, is a good candidate for extension upwards covering the largely subway-less area bounded by the Crosstown line, the Myrtle Avenue line, the Canarsie line, the Flushing line, and the Queens Boulevard line. It could possibly run all the way to the LaGuardia airport. It could connect the Fulton Street, Nassau Street, Canarsie, Flushing, and Queens Boulevard line. Furthermore, the Crosstown line has two extra tracks just north of Bedford-Nostrand Avenues; it could be used to join the Franklin Avenue line as a pair of express tracks.

What do you think?

Not to going to happen in near future if ever at all. If the subways or any rapid transit such as light rail was ever expanded other than current 2nd ave subway and extension of the #7 line to Javits, it would be in Queens and the Bronx first.

Regarding extending the Franklin Ave line if monies were ever found i think it would be extended to Williamburg Plaza to connect wu=/ the "J, M and Z" lines.

I'm sure if we reach a point where necessary improvements are made and there is room for expansion, the plan could be considered.

Today's Franklin Avenue Shuttle once connected to the Fulton Street El. Before the subway connection opened in 1920, Brighton Line trains used this route and terminated at Park Row.

Franklin Avenue occasionally was considered for shutdown until it was completely rehabilitated in 1998. Today it is a good connection between the (A)(C) at Franklin Avenue and the (B)(Q) at Prospect Park with a transfer option to the (2)(3).

If you need a crosstown in Bklyn/Queens/Bronx, then the Triboro RX is just fine.

Just because it is extended a few more stops doesn't change the fact it is just a shuttle. I mean the 6th Av S a few years ago, before the V train, ran from 21st Queensbridge to W4th was a fairly long line, but was still just a shuttle and ran with the F line.

I couldn't think of the name of the thing... That's just what I was going to say when I first noticed this thread; the TriboroRx... gotta remember that...

anyway, threadstarter, no sense in extending the franklin av shuttle all the way to Queens... or anywhere north of where it currently ends at - Fulton st.

Oh, sorry, B35! I used Quick Reply, but I was addressing Lex and TTC. Should have made that a little more specific.

Yea, I really don't want to travel all the way through Manhattan just to reach another place. The G service sucks too. I've got to admit though, converting the lightly used line into a subway that connects three boroughs is a pretty good idea compared to extending the Franklin Avenue shuttle since that extension would involve more digging and construction than converting a line.
