Would you think the MTA would revert back to old tech?

So why did you ask? I mean from all the R160's they have, it's not like the trains are getting 'lower tech'.

It's just the electronic map. Aside from that everything else works fine for the most part.

The old equipment often has display problems too such as the side destination signs on the R44 & 46 or those illegible route signs on the R32 (& now retired R38). All were more comprehensible pre-overhaul IMO.

I think that the clearest route signs were the original fronts of the slants and the R42. You could see the route designation from New Jersey (OK, you know what I mean) smile

how are they illegible and you can see it when you look at it.

So the R188 will have find right? Will the R188 be programmed for the 1,2,3,4,5,6 lines just in case for some "emergency"

The end signs on the R32 & R38 are tiny, the background contrast is insufficient as well as the lighting and the font choice also makes it maddening to read. Often times I'd have to wait until the train was upon me before I could read the route sign. Also, since the letters C and E and similarly shaped, as opposed to a J, let's say, it compunded the problem. IMO, this was the worst part of their overhauls. Their first route signs were much easier to read.

The problem on the R44 and R46, and for me the R46 specifically, is that the side signs are frequently blanked out or only partially displaying text or in some instances saying the wrong thing. Additionally, I find the font not the easiest to read. Compare this to the standard MTA font and background used on their fixed signage. Forget about the clarity of the message being conveyed and instead focus on the words, letter and numbers. They are nearly all easily read.

Like sometimes when r32s on E/F, its hard to read the front route sign from a distance.

do u think the r188 will have FIND in them?...if the R188 are only extra cars to add to the r142 from the 6line you could see new FIND's installed or a mix of FIND and strip maps?

R188's probably will have them. The R142's would just have the 7 line strip maps.

I love the R62A's and the R142A's but I think the R188's should be their own car class. From what I am understanding of the R188's, they sound like they would be caboose cars to the R142A. The 7 should have gotten the R142's back in 2000. I've said this plenty of times on here, the R62A's are GREAT on the 7. They should make them CBTC ready if it's cheaper.

As for R62A's back on the 6, I have mixed feelings on it. I used to love them on the 6 back in the day but now, I think the R142A's are the better car for the 6. I don't like the idea of robbing Peter to pay Paul, which is what this car swap would be. The 6 can rock any car class that comes it's way. I just think the possible swap is wrong but the MTA is going to do what they do and I'll live with whatever they decide to do. That's all I can do.

funny thing is the 6line can still use the express and local LED's from the 7!..... As for the strip map issue...if the format is ABBBACABBBA cars the A's,B's would be the R142A's and the C car would be R188's which could mean 10 strip maps and 1 FIND or cheaper way making that one car have strip map too?

The R188 would just be inserted into a current 5-car set to make the set 6 cars. They don't want the 11th car to be isolated from the rest of the train.
Obviously it would be much easier to just have one single and attach it to the front or back of the train.

And yes, the LED signs on the R62A's are why it makes sense that they would go back to the 6 rather than to the 4. So this way the 6/<6> would have no confusions. And the 6 is all R142A's which would give the 7 a fleet of only one car type than the two car types on the 4 [R142/A*].

*R142S is just additional R142A's, same type of train, no difference.

I don't think that the East Siders would be happy at all 'stepping down' to an older train. I wonder how much fuss they'd make if and when this all happens.

i meant that the R40-44s have their problems but we deal with them and the r32s are old and going and the 38s were almost fine except for the roof, issues.
