I like to thank Vinster from NYCTF for pointing out this article from this morning "AM New York." The "G" will be extended to Church Ave at all times 24/7 starting Sunday July 5, 2009.

G Heads To Church Starting July 5th

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The G line grows in Brooklyn
By Heather Haddon AM New York, May 15, 2009

G train riders, for once, can expect some good news.

After several years of customer request mainly from Brooklyn riders, The MTA board is looking to extend the G line five stops deeper into Brooklyn to Church Avenue.

If as expected this extension is approved, the new service will begin July 5. G commuters will gain a free transfer to the M and R lines at the 4th Avenue-9th Street stop.

The $2.5 million change is a necessary first step in overhauling the Culver Viaduct, an 80-year-old cement elvated structure that carries the F and G lines past the Gowanus Canal, above 9th Street in Brooklyn. Also included in this project is the full closure of the Smith-9th Street station for up to nearly a full year starting sometime next year. The Project is expected to take about 2 years to complete.

The MTA is replacing the tracks, signals and concrete on the crumbling viaduct that stands at the highest point in the subway system.

The MTA board will vote on the changes later this month. If ridership reaches a high enough projection, this "G" line extension will become permanent.

True indeed. laugh Especially people from Bay Ridge going to Ft Greene, Clinton Hill, parts of Williamsburg and Greenpoint(also vice versa) now have a much easier trip via transfer at the 4th Ave-9th St station.

The article stated an almost assured approval (aka 'expected approval") so it probably true. Plus the Daily News first broke this story of an "G" extension to Church Ave at least 2 years ago in 2007.

Even with the extension G riders are still going to have cram into those 4-car sets, but it's better than it's current terminal.

the extension would have to happen to facilitate the construction.. vote or none.. the vote would be needed to fund 'permanant" extension..

concerns.. um are ther egnna be more trainsets added , b/c knowing he company, tehy'll still run the same number of trains not caring about 5 extra stops... so hdwyy spikes from 10 mins midday to 18.. for example

Now its done deal. Here MTA press release.

MTA New York City Transit Extends G Line During Culver Viaduct Rehabilitation

Beginning July 5 and lasting approximately four years, extensive reconstruction of the Culver Viaduct will require the extension of the G Line subway service to Church Avenue in Southern Brooklyn. While designed to accommodate this major structure rehabilitation, the extension will provide additional service south of Smith-9th Street, save travel time for many customers and provide additional transfer options.

This change is necessary because rehabilitation of the steel and concrete structure, opened in 1933 as part of the IND system, requires the removal of two tracks from service for the duration of the project, eliminating the area at 4th Av-9th Street used by G trains to reverse direction.

The $257.5 million engineering and construction project will see the complete renovation of the structure and replacement of the signaling system and tracks. The project area stretches from the tunnel portal south of the Carroll Street station to the portal south of Fourth Avenue. The project calls for the reconstruction of the concrete deck slab, deck waterproofing, and the installation of new low-vibration track. The Fourth Avenue interlocking will be upgraded with new switches and signals, as well as new signal controls that will be Communication Based Train Control (CBTC) ready.

"This is an important long-term reconstruction project that will renew this 76 year-old structure and its systems. The work actually increases travel options for many of our customers along the F and G Lines," pointed out MTA New York City Transit President Howard H. Roberts, Jr. "Riders utilizing the line between Church Avenue and 4th Ave-9th Street will benefit from more frequent service."

As part of the reconstruction project, G trains will operate on the local tracks south of Smith-9th Street to Church Avenue in Brooklyn at all times, providing service to five additional stations: 4th Av-9th Street, 7th Ave, 15th Street-Prospect Park, Fort Hamilton Parkway and Church Ave. At Church Ave, G trains will reverse direction south of the station where there are four tracks, providing a better operating environment which will help improve reliability for both the F and G lines.

Customers will benefit from the extension of the G with the availability of new, direct connections with the M R lines at 4th Av-9th Street eliminating the additional transfer to the F. Additionally, riders making the connection to A and C trains at Jay Street-Borough Hall will now have the additional option to utilize the G to make the connection at Hoyt-Schermerhorn which will make for speedier trips.

As a result of the extension, it is estimated that on a typical weekday, 8,700 riders will save an average of three minutes.

Since the V came to Queens Blvd it basically elimated G service from there. Except late nights and weekends it runs via QB. Most weekends has GOs and stops G from running on QB. Majority of the time it terminates and Court Sq. Also because it has only 4 cars its too small for QB line, sometimes you can't realize its at the stations.

The G maybe small, but it is still better than waiting like 10-12min for the R to show up. Plus most riders will get off at Roosevelt [E/F/R] or Queens Plaza for the E or R to go to Manhattan.
They should have 2 locals on QB all times. G should run when the V doesn't, but if the G no longer runs there, then run the E local.
