Run the 54 straight down the Bronx/Mt Vernon Border the whole way, Mundy Lane/Seton Avenue, then East 233rd Street, then Dyre Avenue (5) station (54 will then serve a subway station), Boston Road into Pelham Manor Mall. Unless the 54 needs to continue running down West 6th Street where it meets up with the 42 again, then turn onto Boston Post Road, into Pelham Manor Mall.

The Bx16 will then run in Bronx, Yonkers (touches the border W/B only), Mount Vernon (W/B only), and Pelham Manor.

looking at the map I must agree that the 54, 53 is the suitable routes as the other near by routes have a purpose

Bingo. Don't mess with the bread and butter unless there is some major reason.

60 could loop in and out of the mall like the 20 does at Cross County, but that would add running time to the route

Dumb question? Is this new "Pelham Manor" a new mall/shopping center on site of a former shopping center headed Caldor & Model department stores back in day?

Like they did before.

I agree with you. I do not feel sorry for this mall due to the fact that it worked when it was open before.

To be honest doesn't the 53 serve two train stations? waht is the ridership on that route?

With the exception of MVHS trips, ridership on the route is very weak. Trips are generally in the single digits to some lower teens.

I'm not even sure if any stores at the new mall would even appeal to those who ride the bus. From what I've read, Home Depot is one of the stores being built.

Yet another question, looking a bit ahead this time. 2010 is the expected finish for cross county, and a few weeks ago, I was overlooking the new blueprint for the finished area. I noticed, a bus stop on it, outside of the mall (the street facing stop & shop), any changes in routes at CC?

Ok so if the main portion is MT vernon School kids meaning that 3/4 of the route is dead. I figured at least the Pelham RR would have some riders from the route. where are the kids getting on the bus at? Isn't there "school buses that go to the school?

I read on other blogs radical ideas that I thought you would find intresting

combining the 8 and the 26

9 and the 32

plus extending the 53 to vernon hills mall on post road

Yes, but only to a minor degree. The #50 & #61 provide pretty good service on Boston Rd. with a stop at Pelham Pkwy. The southbound stop, currently on the nearside of the intersection, in front of the gas station, will be moved to the far side when new curbs and a sidewalk installed.

Don't you mean the W60, not the W50?

The W55 stops on Fulton and So. Columbus, which is just a block away. It's not the most pleasant block to walk on, but it will suffice until any bus route modifications are made.

Maybe the MTA can extend the Bx16 directly into the mall since it terminates nearby.

The Bx16 stops right across the street from the mall site. It practically goes there already.

West 6th Street (Sandford Boulevard) never meets Boston Post Road.

Yes.

I'm not sure if both sides of the mall will be under the same "manor" umbrella, but the current site of mall construction is on the opposite side of where Model's was. It's on Omni Gym's side of the road.

Model's side is being excavated to restore the soil from the previous gas station located there.

West 6th Street becomes East 6th Street after crossing South 5th Avenue.
W54 meets W42 at East 6th Street, which becomes Colonial Avenue, W42 then turns on Pelhamdale Avenue, then turns on Boston Post Road.
W54 would turn in the opposite direction (right towards mall) of the W42 (left toward New Rochelle) on Boston Post Road if dadbo46 were to go along with this routing option.

First of all, there's no 6th Street in Mount Vernon. What was 6th Street is called Sandford Blvd. It's named after a past mayor of Mount Vernon.

Secondly, South 4th Ave. divides east and west in Mount Vernon.

If the #54 is to be extended, I would simply bring it down S. Fulton Ave., cross the Creek bridge and pull into the shopping center.

South 4th Avenue and Gramatan Avenue (North 4th Avenue) are the east west dividers

the #54's ridership has been increasing lately, are any of the trips having a near seated load (or at least close to it)?

No it hasn't. Passengers on the #54 have decreased.

There is one 54 trip that continues on to MVHS. That is the only trip all day that operates with double digits....and that has decreased too.

Mt. Vernon has opened a second high school at at corner of S. 5th Ave. and W. 2nd St. It has drawn students away from MVHS thereby reducing the number of buses going there. We have reduced the PM number by 2.

I guess the 54 increase was only temporary, it did have an increase last year..

http://www.straphangers.org/diaries/ubbthreads.php/ubb/showflat/Number/375605/fpart/1

Which route has higher ridership W53, or W54?

LOL....I went beserk with our finance guy when I read that in the paper. 29% of nothing is still nothing !!!

About 100 a day on the #54 and 475 a day on the #53. But bear in mind that 250 on the #53 are MVHS students.

Are the 54 morning riders school kids as well or target mall workers , who ride this bus?

Maybe the bus should not only serve the mall but also the Near by Dyre Train Station / Or BAYCHESTER AVENUE STATION ridership would then increase.

Run the W54 as a border route, then to Dyre Avenue
