How might you envision transportation in the New York Area 75 years from now? Be creative with your ideas.

I envision it being mostly like in Venice now. Some relatively high areas, like Morningside Heights and Washington Heights, will have a little bit of bus service, but mostly travel will be done using boats.

I envision Rockaways will get high-speed ferry and install Express Bus Farebox on their boat.
QM16 and QM17 will operate like every 90 minutes way Spring Creek Bus Depot does it.
Maybe, entire subways, PATH, Metro-North and LIRR will be replace by new technology train.
MTA Bus taking over Long Island Bus, and properly more and extended service on Rockland Coach bus to New York, well as improving Bee-Line and Long Island Bus.
Maybe, NYCT and MTA Bus will get USDOT #s, so it could go to Connecticut or Westchester or New Jersey way S89 does now.

Something I envision is a single ticket making transportation seamless and smoother for people who live outside the city but work inside it. It appears we've started toward something like a single ticket and it will be interesting to see if it expands toward encompassing the entire region.

Something I envision is the city swallowing its suburbs, once again. New York could well have eight boroughs - the current five, plus Nassau, Suffolk, and Westchester. Ideally it should also have Hudson, Bergen, Essex, and Union, but having a city in two different states involves major constitutional headaches.

By 2083, I feel the SAS will be constructed as originally planned and potentially extended west to Lenox Avenue and south to Battery Park. This will relieve the Lexington Avenue Line and give riders new choices on their routing.

By 2083 will we be celebarting the following:

1)The 100th year anniversity of Thriller by Micheal Jackson and doing moonwalks on the moon.

2)Will there be 'flying cars' like those seen on the Jetsons and "Back to the future?"

3)Graffti returns to NYC subway to celebrate the 100 anniversity of hip-hop culture and break dancing? lol

After watching the "ISLAND" dvd, maybe track will appeared that makes train flying.
I also envision all New Flyer and Motorcoach Industry to create new MCI Articulated Bus wish comfortable recycling restroom and seat, and also snack bar inside for longer trip, and also high-speed lift for wheelchair and walkers.
Restroom at City Park and Governors Island will use Recycling Restroom to keep city water clean.

(A) train will get new kind of train that interior is like R-160 and there will be snack bar, especially on (A) ride between 207th St & Mott Av.

Buses serving airport will have luggage rack.

New radio communication will be install on all Suffolk County Transit buses, so connecting bus will wait for late bus.

lol coming to terms with the facts I see.
Btw, any train has bad screeching noises when the t/o breaks really hard. Even happens on the new trains like the R142's.

lets see:

metro north will be expanded to: springfield, MA and albany. shoreline east will start to run trains from providence to new haven, with 2 each day continuing to NY, so in 2083 you could take a trip from boston to philly...without stepping on amtrak. amtrak will be virtually extinct as its taken over by expanding commuter railroads. LIRR & metro north will be in GCT so GCT will look like penn does today. with advances in modern technology, t/o's aren't needed anymore.

Some good ideas and some humorous ideas. Thanks to posters who've contributed. Alon comes up with some thought-invoking ideas. Good job, Alon.

That may be so, error46146, but by 2083, there likely will be more people in the city and in the metropolitan area. While not maybe major, the M.T.A. and NJT may have a different look.

By 2020 , scratchitti will have become a thing of the past.
In 2045, the entire SAS will have been built.
CBTC will have been implemented on all IRT lines, the L, and Eighth Avenue.
The city will have gone through huge financial growth, allowing them to extend the 7 to Bayside, and the N/W to LaGuardia.
Currently, the MTA is deciding to follow through with some of the ancient IND Second System plans, and is waiting for board approval on building a new line under 110th Road (or whatever the plan was, I'm too lazy to go on www.nycsubway.org).

I think it will be far behind the times and the fares out of control and the infrastructure and crowding terrible!

At least, if the current way things are handled doesn't change...
