Hey everyone, I just registered wanting to find some help on question I have.

I took this open competitive exam, 5016 - Track Worker. I took it I think last April 2006, got my result around September or October 2006. I scored a 98.75 on the test and have list #77. I figured I would get called up by now but nothing yet.
I'm 22 and in college and haven't looked for a job yet because I hope that i'll get called up for this job, but nothing yet.

So I was wondering if someone could tell me on average like how long does it usally take to get called up for an MTA job and do the other tests and stuff?
Thanks

Nice score. I got a 93.75, or list #1199 out of 7119.

The average wait for a civil service test like the one we took takes about 2 or so years. I called their(NYC DCAS) automated phone # and the list has been opened since March 14th and it'll expire on that same day in 2011. Since you scored high, I wouldn't doubt that you would be called within this year, but don't take my word for it. Here's the phone # so you can check: 212-669-1357

So, how did it go? It seems the list for Track Worker Exam #5016 was established back in March '07. And given your list number, they're moving at about 30-50 persons per month or so.

Outside of that, fared well?

When are they gonna have tests for conductors? I would take it. Announcing the stops needs a test? That is nuts.

To all those who are thinking about or have applied to work at New York City Transit... My sincere condolences to you.

I worked there from 1990 until the end of 1998 and couldn't wait to resign. Although I enjoy working in public transportation, the time spent there was the worst experience of my life. I worked as a Cleaner, Trackworker, Conductor, then Train Operator and in each department had to deal with excessively bloated egos from the bosses and some of the most incompetent people I've had to put up with.

Despite popular belief, the few intelligent people employed there are NOT paid nearly enough for putting up with the working conditions, insane, arrogant, and unappreciative people riding the trains.

Anyone scoring less than 85 or 80 on civil service exam may not get called unless they're desparately short of people for a particular postion because after they go through the top 1/3 of the list they usually administer another test and start a new list. This is one of the ways NYC makes money for itself too.

If you want a much better experience in working serving the public on trains... go to the MTA's website and apply online for postions at Metro-North or the Long Island Rail Road. They both pay more than NYCT, have better working conditions and treat their employees more like human beings.
