It's there because the tracks were always there. And it's an important link between subway riders on the East and West Sides, and has VERY heavy ridership for a mere shuttle.
You think the (7) can handle that load all on its own? And who wants to stop at Fifth Avenue, anyway? Consider it the 42 Street Express. ^^

oh and by the way, on the ridership list, what does this mean?: "16. 74 St/Roosevelt Ave (7,E,F,G,R,V) 13,485,468 [25% of ridership]" its the part in the brackets that i dont get

This is 3rd Avenue, 149th Street. Transfer is available to the 2 train. This is a Nereid Avenue bound 5 express train. The next stop is East 180th Street.

So, the top 16 stations handle 25% of Metrocard entries.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Where the original IRT's Tracks 2, 3, and 4 were, today exists a hot, humid employee passage containing various storage rooms, plumbing rooms, signal rooms, and, near the original junction of both uptown local tracks, stands Grand Central Master Tower today, which controls the entire Lexington Avenue Line from Bowling Green to 125 Street. There's also a lunch room and bathrooms for the platform controllers.
This corridor curves parallel to today's Track 1S, which was the original downtown local track.
