Does it help? Why would it be there if you can take the 7?

It's there because the tracks were always there. And it's an important link between subway riders on the East and West Sides, and has VERY heavy ridership for a mere shuttle.

You think the (7) can handle that load all on its own? And who wants to stop at Fifth Avenue, anyway? Consider it the 42 Street Express. ^^

It is needed for the rush hour and the tourists.
You have to go pretty deep for the 7 just to travel cross town.
Rush hour the shuttle is packed, the 7 could not handle the crowds.
Your idea takes effect late night when they shut down the shuttle.

there should be a shuttle on 125th, since there's no other train that could take you crosstown. at least on 14th street you can take the L, so you dont really need a shuttle

The Shuttle does help out espectally when transfering from the West Side to the East Side or vice-versa.

The 7 line does one thing which the Shuttle can't do. That is being allowed to transfer to the IND 6th Avenue Line.

I'm not pointing out anyone in particular but I wish people would stop basing ideas on what the map indicates and base them on actual ridership numbers.

I didn't know the TSQ-GC Shuttle had that much ridership. I've only been on like 5 times, and there wasn't that much people on it.

if you mean my idea about 125th, it wasnt based on the map, just i wish it was there for personal use. and im guessing that mentioning 14th street is justified b/c all 3 stations on 14th are in the top 29 on the ridership list

oh and by the way, on the ridership list, what does this mean?: "16. 74 St/Roosevelt Ave (7,E,F,G,R,V) 13,485,468 [25% of ridership]"
its the part in the brackets that i dont get

During the rush hours (AM and PM) the shuttle is extremely crowded - all 3 trains.

Yes, and like everyone said it is just a few feet below ground compared to the 7 being far below and during the rush hours for a quick connection and a 'speedy' travel I'm sure most would take the 42nd S over the 7. And being 2 stops there is no risk of train delays due to unknown variables like the 7 and its line from Flushing to GCT.

It seems to me that it means that 25% of all ridership (at least, those using Metrocards there) use this station and all the ones above it. So, the top 16 stations handle 25% of Metrocard entries.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

S shuttle service runs every 2-3 minutes peak and can be really packed. On weekends many tourists use it.

Well it has it's own enterance since it is isolated from the other lines only the 'bridge' connects to the other lines thus making transfers inconvenient. And why 1 and 3 are used often.
I think I took that shot around 4pm the start of the rush hour mode.

The M42 is useless...sits in the Times Square area sometimes for 10-15 minutes, the traffic above ground is just as ridiculous, so the shuttle is pretty useful...although at night, if you know the M42 schedule, its better than using the 7 :p

Unless the person needed to get to 12th Av or 1st Av. That's what the M42 is really good for

7 train is easy access from 4/5/6 platform and A/C/E platform, right?
Last time, I followed sign and 7 platform was underneath these platforms.

At 42 St/Port Authority (A/C/E), just follow the long corridor between the IND and IRT/BMT at 41 St. The 7 is about midway through.

From the 4/5/6, the stairs down to the 7 are on the Grand Central platform.

Actually it didn't. That is one of the things that prompted the MTA to shut it down overnight and have people use the 7.

42nd St Shuttle at Times Square station has direct access from Broadway/7th Av-43rd St SW MetroCard entrance, opposite of Police Station, so people could just get on and catch shuttle train to GCT.
At Grand Central-42nd St, Madison Av/42nd St SW and NW entrances, well as 317 Madison Av entrance are right over 42nd St Shuttle Platform on west end, including Park Av/42nd St entrance on southbound 42nd St, right?

BTW - I just thought I would mention that the entrance at Broadway/7th Av & 43rd St dates back to 1904.

Yes, that is one of the original entrances to the uptown local platform (now track 4 of the shuttle).

One of the original entrances to the downtown local platform (track 1 of the shuttle) is next to the Gap store on the southeast corner of 42nd and Broadway.

Interesting note about that station is that the shuttle paltform is the last renovation that is to take place at that staion.

Due to possible plans of having strait platforms rather than curved [as it is now]. However, it is also possible it means moving back the station a bit east from the current one.

Probably a partial closing during the week with a complete closing on the weekends.

If they were to close it completely during rush hours the 7 would be hard pressed to handle all the extra passengers (just getting down to the station at GC could take a lot of time).

Track 2 was removed and the trackbed covered over to create the platform for track 3 at Times Square. At Grand Central the extra wide platform covers track 2. If you look out the window as the train travels between TS and GC you will see the roadbed (w/o the track).

The Times Square station was originally built as a local station for the first IRT route.

Another excellent read on this topic:

Where the original IRT's Tracks 2, 3, and 4 were, today exists a hot, humid employee passage containing various storage rooms, plumbing rooms, signal rooms, and, near the original junction of both uptown local tracks, stands Grand Central Master Tower today, which controls the entire Lexington Avenue Line from Bowling Green to 125 Street. There's also a lunch room and bathrooms for the platform controllers.

This corridor curves parallel to today's Track 1S, which was the original downtown local track.

The 42d Street Shuttle, part of the original I.R.T. route, helps the (7)<7> between two important Manhattan stations and connects the West and East Sides I.R.T..
