Hello to everyone..I am a begining subway enthuisist and wanted to say hello! I was wondering if someone could tell me what the point of the W train is? It seems redundant considering it only runs during the week and basicially makes R and N stops. Correct me if I'm wrong but along with the V isn't the W one of the only lines that has no stops of its own? So just what is the point of the W train?

Welcome to the boards.

The W is considered a supplementary route. Its purpose is to supplement the N and R trains by providing extra service during the weekdays. Or simply put, to keep those lines from becoming too crowded by taking on some of their ridership.

So for example if I'm coming from Astoria and my destination is a local stop on the Broadway Line, instead of taking the the N to the R, I can just get on the W and have a one seat ride to my destination.

The reason it runs only on weekdays is because weekend ridership isn't high enough to warrant running it.

And you're right, the W and V each stop at stations served by another route.

If I'm not mistaken the (B) doesn't make any stops on its own either.

There's a lot of lines that you just have to wonder "What's the point of that?" But when you skip a filled to the brim N or R to a roomy W, you start to understand those kind of things.

Also the (W) is the old (EE) with the difference that it starts at Ditmars Boulevard. The (W) pretty much runs normal hours too.

Another way of looking at it is to realize that there is an imbalance in ridership between the southern and northern ends of the N line. If you doubled the frequency of N trains to accomodate the demand in Astoria you'd have a huge over supply in Brooklyn.

Welcome Rtrain25! The W does appear to seem useless but it really isn't. If for nothing else, it's a help for Broadway Local riders who need all the service they can get.

Except the stops that the D dosen't stop at in the Bronx during Peak Rush Hour.

It is useless. The worst part is that Broadway is congested during rush hour. I wish they simply beefed up N and R service.

Once SAS opens (don't hold your breath, were in a depression) the Q train will no longer terminate at 57th Street, allowing the N train to cross over to the express track north of 57th Street. This will get rid of congestion at Herald Square and ease operations on roadway. Then they can increase service on the NQRW.

In todays Daily News there's yet another article regarding the budget shortfall and how they are considering either reducing service or raising fairs again. I can't imagine there would ever really be a drastic change but doesn't it make sense that a service like the W, which is purely suplementary would be the first to go?

Why would they get rid of the W? The R needs the W because it already shares tracks with the V in Queens and the M [rush hours] in Brooklyn. I don't see the MTA giving the R additional trains. Plus Astoria riders needs their direct to Lower Manhattan line as the N is staying an express over the Bridge.

Rtrain25; Today's announcement means that 1) the (W) stays 6am to 9-9:30pm; 2) the (R) stays as a Fourth Avenue shuttle late nights and 3) the (N) stays via the Montague Street Tunnel late nights.

I think the type of service cut they were looking at was late night service. Going from the 20 minutes headway late night to a 30 minute headway.

Unlike some people on here like Lex express, the "W" is needed weekdays. However i do feel that the service hours should end at appx. 8pm period. During weekday evenings appx. 815pm-Midnight the "N" should make all stops in Manhattan between Lex/59th St and Canal St then operate express via the bridge.

Also slightly off topic, the "V" should also end service at around 8pm. That an easier 'budget cut' to start with.
On other hand the "B" does need to run till 10-11pm as it much busier than either the "W" or "V" lines.

The W just seems like a superfluous and cumbersome line. It is essentially the N local. Prior to 2001 Astoria only had one line. If the R ran the way it's supposed to then you wouldn't need a W.
