R40s on the A do you mean slants or the R40Ms because I know the A will have R40Ms also, and That means it back to the R40M/R42 combo.

no not the slants, the R40M is what ive been seeing. Why are these trains going to the A line? The A train is the train is take the most and I really wouldnt wanna have to take it using cheap outdated cars. I always hated the R40 and now seeing them on my line. I will complain to the MTA about this.

I love the R44 and I would really miss them if they get scrapped. The R44s have always looked so nice on the A line.

You're not seeing R40Ms on the A, those are R42s.

This is all due to more R160s coming in. As you may or may not know, East New York Yard (for the JLMZ trains) has been receiving a steady flow of R160As from Alstom. The Yard can't keep up with maintenance and has little yard space now. R160As have been running on the L and Z but cannot run on the J because of problems with CCTV (all you need to know is that these monitors are the key to the J getting R160s).

Since R160As have hit the M recently, this frees up more R42s to be retired. So this is the deal. ENY Yard will send R42s to Pitkin Yard (for the A and C trains). Pitkin in turn will take these R42s and send their Phase I R32s to Jamaica Yard. This will replace R32 Phase II cars which have been performing poorly (namely the brake equipment, ergo the screeching brakes). For every 12 R42s ENY sends every week, Pitkin sends 12 R32 Phase I cars and Jamaica sends 12 R32 Phase II cars to 207th Street Yard for the reef.

This means the R44s are staying on the A, don't worry about that. R44s aren't going anywhere until at least 2015. The equipment transfer also means that the C will become mainly R38s, and the A R42 and R160. When more R160s come in the R42s will also disappear from the A line and be replaced. It's only temporary.

Currently, R42s 4550-4575 are at Pitkin Yard. You can refer to my subway car datasheet to keep up with the R42s transferred to Pitkin.

Oops, I put that the A would be R160 by accident. I know it won't.

And marcmail, when the R32 were being overhauled in 1988-1991 or so, they used to be referred to as R32 and R32A. The differences between these two were removed during GOH. When overhauled, they were upgraded with the following. And I quote...

"The R-32 Phase I cars (re-built by MK) have WABCO Air Brake packages, GE Master Controllers (Throttle) and Thermoking HVAC units. The R-32 Phase II cars (also re-built by MK) have NY Air Brake equipment, Westinghouse Master Controllers and Stone Safety HVAC units. Since the cars were sent out to overhaul based on how poorly they were performing (bad cars first) there are regular R-32s and R-32As which are Phase I and Phase II. There are also about a dozen pairs which are comprised of R-32 and R-32A mixes."
-Thanks to http://www.nycsubway.org

The NYAB Equipment on the Phase IIs is performing very poorly and that's what's causing the screeching brakes. Phase IIs run out of Jamaica and run on the E, F, and R lines while the Phase Is run out of Pitkin/207 and run on the A and C. Jamaica has its fair share of Phase Is too.

The numbers ranged from 4550-4575. 4572 was probably one of the end cars.

The R32 is not old and pathetic, I understand the phase II but the phase I's are the best, The R44 is pathetic!!! and one more thing the E is going to have R32s until atleast 2010-2013.

The R32 Brightliner has served since 1964. As a subway car, I think they are now behind only the BMT Standard (1914-1969) in service. The el Q Cars served 1903-1969.

The R32's can outlast all those crapy subway cars in service today and the R32 phase I will be the last one to retire, and that won't be until 2013-2015.

The R32 (Phase I), R40Ms and MK R42s will probably be the last ones standing.
