The Bx12 is going to be the first bus to get bus rapid transit in NYC. If this holds true it would be much sooner than I thought. Below is the story from NY1.com

March 24, 2008

The Bronx will be the first of the city's boroughs to see MTA rapid transit buses.

Beginning this summer, the new express buses will run on the Bx12 route along Fordham Road and Pelham Parkway and will be known as the Bx12 Select Bus Service.

The buses will make the same stops as the Bx12 Limited-Stop service, but will run more frequently.

Other features include onboard sensors that can extend green lights, and a dedicated bus lane.

Fares will be the same as regular buses, but riders will pay before boarding and then show a receipt to the driver.

Similar rapid transit routes are scheduled to be implemented in all five boroughs.

Any Thoughts??

Okay, so you have to pay before you get on board...um...why?

And what if you just want a regular 12 limited? Do you have to get on this fancy one?

I can just imagine the traffic disasters...but let me not be so pessimistic.

I actually feel that the western part of this route should run on Kingsbridge heading to 225th to increase access between Riverdale and the rest of the Bronx. It is a pain on the Bx9 to get from 225th to Fordham Plaza.

My BRT Stops
225th/Bway, University, Jerome, Concourse, Fordham Plaza, Southern, White Plains, Williamsbridge, Jacobi, Eastchester, Pelham Bay Park, Einstein Loop South, Bay Plaza

I believe i saw last week on the news when the mayor and the DOT commisioner were on Staten Island on one of the bus routes that they were testing the onboard sensors to extend the lights.

I'm with FamousNYLover, I want to see how this works. I'm not too far from it so I might see it that first weekend that it's in service.

to speed boarding, which would speed up the the entire trip.
similar to taking the train, just get on when it arrives, no waiting.

So does anyone know if the lights along Pelham Pkwy/Fordham Rd are currently capable of this technology as of yet.
and they have to install some sort of farebox at the limited stops.
How long do they expect this to take, considering this is suppose to running this summer. I see no evidence of it, except for the red bus lane on Fordham Rd which has been there for a while anyway.

Great question? Maybe just the stations(ie former limited stop locations)and the BRT lanes will be open & running by summer.
Also this is a test for the real challenge(no offense to my Bronx friends) for the 1st/2nd Ave M-15 coordior in Manhattan which is next.

I have a feeling this isn't going to work out well. The best solution would be to just increase the frequency of the Bx12 and the Bx12 Limited.

I know you never been on it but do you support 'light rail/trolley' for areas like Fordham/Pelham Parkway? Light rail/trolley is best described as a subway on a major street that not underground.

It sounds like a good idea in theory, but it would require building walking transfers from the existing (4), (B)/(D), (2) and (5) stations. This construction would be rather expensive. The most cost-efficient way would be to simply increase headways on the Bx12 and Bx12 Limited.

Sebbie there 1 huge difference between subway and light rail/trolley. No need to bulid any new underground. In many cities the lines were bulit on existing streets/roads and old railroad/frieght tracks and thus could be bulit in couple of years not many years like for example 2nd ave subway.

Only negative is a street like Fordham/Pelham Parkway may have to permanetly lose at 2 lanes of car traffic.

Truth be told, I never had a problem with the Bx12. I only took it once but there were many buses along the line.

I think it has the potential to work very well. And if NYCT wants it to work then they will eventually make some changes. Firstly, there has to rigid enforcement of keeping other traffic out of the bus lanes with swift and harsh penalties. Secondly, the idea of having everyone show a ticket to the operator is not going to reduce dwell time in stops significantly. If they employ the "random inspector" method that is used on Hudson Bergen, then there is no need for that. Passengers would then board at whichever door is nearest to them.

There is a significant difference between light rail/trolley/tram and subway/el/metro. It's not about whether it's underground or not. Boston and Philadelphia both have trolley systems underground. It is a relative term in which the word "light" refers to intended usage. So that industry talk indentifies subway/el/metro as "heavy" rail. In other words, more heavily used than light rail. Therefore they usually run much shorter trains at longer intervals, than heavy rail. That, along with the overhead (as opposed to third rail) power supply is what permits street operation.

Bx12 BRT to start Jun 29th according to http://www.NYC.gov
alot of questions about it are answered like..

there will be boarding thru the front and rear doors.
incresed bus lane enforcement
for what its worth, buses will have flashing lights (lights, lights)
also..

This will be expanding to other lines in the 5 boros, ONLY if Congestion Pricing is approved.

Heres the link..

There goes the NIMBY's again. Even with the artics stopping there closer to COOP City itself, some people still have to complain.

While this Taub person in article has right to express 'concern' about the new BX12 express serving Asch Place, ie lack of space, etc. there 'room for compromise' imo. Like going on other streets in Coop area for instance. I could be wrong but from tone of article Mr. Taub wants no bus service on or near Asch.

I bet if this was the BXM7 MTA express going there i think Mr. Taub would be doing cartwheels right now.
