This morning I rode car 2153 on the 7, and it had both the new LED "EXP/LCL" signs as well as all BLUE seats (the same color as the R142's). I think that it looked pretty attractive (or maybe it was just the newness of it).

Does anyone know whether this is a general plan for the R62A fleet on the 7? If they are going to replace all the seats though, they should replace them with non-bucket!!

On a semi-related note, nycsubway.org says that on the R62's "intermediate half cabs [are] removed or in process of being removed." Is this true? I don't ride R62-based lines regularly enough to notice, but are there really some cars with the half-cabs taken out (and I presume 2 additional seats put in)?

Corona Yard had to replace a few seats on that car of the train, and they decided not to paint it over, I guess. I've heard about that car before. I don't think it's a new thing.

You can find the same phenomenon on R46 5771, also with the same flooring as the R62A, R68/A and R32.

ah, that makes sense. guess if they are replacing ALL the seats then it looks good uniformly blue.

i actually got to look at that same train this morning from across the platform at 61st - none of the other cars had blue seats, indeed. but seeing it raised a new question... in the first car (queens bound) of that same train i saw *something* bright green and glowing, in a circular shape. it went by too fast to really see it, since i was at the middle of the platform, and i didn't catch the car number - but has anyone seen this/knows what it is?

Also, that train's car numbers go something like 1736-1737-1738-1739-1740-2156-2155-2153-2152-2154-2151.

yes! very unusual, i did notice that. i think it was [5 car set]-2153-2154-2155-??? (didn't see). so that would make the first car 2151, 2152, or 2156, i think.

That is the special train with LOCAL/EXP LED indicators.

there is more than one with the red LED signs, i've seen at least 3-4 different ones. i was thinking they were going to outfit all 7 stock with them? would make sense if they are not going to deploy R142s on the 7. during the day there are ALWAYS trains running with rollsigns that don't match their service pattern, so this would help cut down on confusion.

It's the same train. You're just seeing the same one over and over again.

they had different car numbers. i always look at the car number when i board a train, just out of curiosity. also, i'm pretty sure i've seen two at once at grand central (both tracks).

Did you happen to catch the car numbers? I take the 7 every weekday and the only set I see is with 1736 in it.

I'm sure it is the same train as the one listed above, and yes it helps if you write down the numbers and compare it to the one above.

There's only one train with the LED's installed along the 7 line. So far. No new ones have been put in yet.

I need to find that train. It would be so cool to see that Green circle and red diamond. How long does anyone here think it will take before we find out if the experiment worked?

I thought I may have seen similar turquoise seats on a W train (R40?) in Manhattan while riding on a Brooklyn-bound R160 one or two weeks ago. I could also be hallucinating.

Those might have been pre-overhaul seats on the R40. Or just replacement seats. I think I know what you're talking about. Do you mean this?

yeah, now i'm thinking you guys are right about that... although i could have sworn i had a memory of seeing two of them at once... odd.

i was lucky enough to get that train in 2 of my last 3 7-train trips - last evening heading to the city on a local, and this morning on an express (so i got to see both configurations)! it is pretty darn cool. better than the little "LCL/EXP" signs that the train had before. the LED's are SUPER BRIGHT also.

of course i would still prefer they just give the 7 line R142's ;\) (but i know this isn't likely because of the 11-car configuration on the line)

I am a little surprised that they are linking cars in sets of six on this line. That would imply that NYCT is planning on keeping those 62a's over there and not planning to send in replacements any time soon. And that, in turn, is strange seeing as how the CBTC plan called for the 7 to be next in line to get it. This may give credence to a rumor brewing that NYCT doesn't want the expense of retrofitting the R-142 with CBTC equipment. But would rather outfit the 7 with brand new equipment when it gets CBTC. Also consider that transferring R-142's to the 7 would require either operating ten car trains or ordering additional "B" cars to complete the 11 car consists. Even in today's high tech world, I don't think it would be wise to order new cars to run in trains with almost ten year old cars, given the NYCT's propensity to foul up the car compatibility issue.

that is very insightful! and perhaps exciting, if they are really contemplating brand new cars for the 7 line... although you would think they'd have announced this by now? i wonder if that would come at the expense of some R160 options... which i would disagree with, since it is much more important to replace the R40's (for example) than some still-in-good-condition R62A stock...
