Today, I got on R62A #1736-2151, the one with the LED signs. When I got on set 2151, I notice that one sign was completely different than the others. It had a green circle surrounding a diamond shape with the 7 rollsign in the middle. Car 2151 was the only car with that sign. Here's how it looks like.

On the same car with the ordinary LED sign.

Maybe, green (7) means local.
Welcome back, Bracamonte!
I think (7) train is installing that to indicate local or express.

Yes Yuki. We are testing LED signage on the 7 line. I'm not sure but there may be more than one style or display type in the test stages. What I was told, is that whichever one is considered successful (the best) will be installed in all R-62, 62a, 68 and 68a's. We'll have to wait and see how that pans out. Thanks for the pix. I had not seen this one before.

I've already seen pictures of the green LED. The green means local (hence the circle) and the red means express (hence the diamond).

But the Corona R62A are really the only trains that need this.

And a 'cheaper' alternative than to switch cars from the 6 and buying up to 47 single cars to make 10-car trains into 11-car trains.

I have yet to see this! I'm psyched for it because I can never tell whether the train is local or express when I get on at Grand Central. I usually have to rely on the lady on the platform with her bullhorn to yell, "Express, Express!" LOL, I love her.

The signs are often unreliable, and either the people on the train don't know they're on a local or express, or they don't care to tell you, or they don't speak English. LOL

There were other pictures posted on SubChat.

I don't like the new design though. Although it's easier to distinguish, it blocks out most of the rollsign so it may be rendered useless for other lines. the LCL/EXP sign is better, though they can probably augment it with some sort of color system like a solid red/green bar to distinguish between a local and express train.

although to be honest with you this new thing looks more hideous than before, they should have done it redbird style with the EXP and LCL signs in the front

I don't believe I've ever seen the LED signs on the (7).

Looks like the TA has agreed on making the green circle/red diamond the new indicator for express and local trains. According to this article, a second train has gone out in this configuration instead of the original LCL/EXP one. Look for even more sets as the year progresses.

I've never seen this, it a good idea, but it looks kinda weird to me too.

What the 7 really needs is the digital trains like the (2)(4)(5)(6)

but i know that aint cheap..so this can do for now.

Are both sets fully equipped? Does anyone have car numbers? I know the first set with the original signs is 1736-1740-215X for all six singles.

Don't know the numbers on the second set but the first one has been refitted with the new signs. The LCL/EXP is gone.

I did see one set leaving 5th Ave today but it was too far down for me to catch the numbers.

At least the guessing game at Queensboro Plaza will end.

I highly doubt it. You know New Yorkers.
I overheard this guy the other day at 59th Street on the 6, "THESE TRAINS ARE TOO [****] OLD! WHY DOESN'T THE MTA REPLACE THEM?!"

He was serious, but maybe he was just illiterate...

They split that one set. Noticed it early this morning. About 5-6 cars that include 1737 have been coupled with another 5 cars w/o it.

Rather strange. The 5-6 cars fitted were on the north side of the train...

Perhaps they're testing how the sign control works when the split a set up.

Interesting. I guess this will have to do until they replace them with R142s.

There is no need to send the R142's to Corona since they would have to order another 47 cars just to make a 10-car train into 11-car trains. The R62A's are fine for the 7 since they can run in 11-car configurations. This new LED feature will make things much better for the 7 not to mention the color and shapes would make it easier to distinguish over the current LCD side displays on the R142's.

I was doing the laundry (yes I know) at a laundromat near the Roosevelt Avenue station and saw the train with the LED lights.

Silly me only looked at the car numbers of the last 5 cars, which I already knew...

I have seen the LED set three days in a row starting Monday. It's the same set, not split up - 17361737-1738-1739-1740+2153+2154+2155+2152+2150+2151.
