Today, I got on R62A #1736-2151, the one with the LED signs. When I got on set 2151, I notice that one sign was completely different than the others. It had a green circle surrounding a diamond shape with the 7 rollsign in the middle. Car 2151 was the only car with that sign. Here's how it looks like.

Yes Yuki. We are testing LED signage on the 7 line. I'm not sure but there may be more than one style or display type in the test stages. What I was told, is that whichever one is considered successful (the best) will be installed in all R-62, 62a, 68 and 68a's. We'll have to wait and see how that pans out. Thanks for the pix. I had not seen this one before.
I have yet to see this! I'm psyched for it because I can never tell whether the train is local or express when I get on at Grand Central. I usually have to rely on the lady on the platform with her bullhorn to yell, "Express, Express!" LOL, I love her.
The signs are often unreliable, and either the people on the train don't know they're on a local or express, or they don't care to tell you, or they don't speak English. LOL

There were other pictures posted on SubChat.
I don't like the new design though. Although it's easier to distinguish, it blocks out most of the rollsign so it may be rendered useless for other lines. the LCL/EXP sign is better, though they can probably augment it with some sort of color system like a solid red/green bar to distinguish between a local and express train.

IAWTP, and yes I did see those pictures on SubChat.
although to be honest with you this new thing looks more hideous than before, they should have done it redbird style with the EXP and LCL signs in the front

Looks like the TA has agreed on making the green circle/red diamond the new indicator for express and local trains. According to this article, a second train has gone out in this configuration instead of the original LCL/EXP one. Look for even more sets as the year progresses.

I highly doubt it. You know New Yorkers. I overheard this guy the other day at 59th Street on the 6, "THESE TRAINS ARE TOO [****] OLD! WHY DOESN'T THE MTA REPLACE THEM?!"
He was serious, but maybe he was just illiterate...

There is no need to send the R142's to Corona since they would have to order another 47 cars just to make a 10-car train into 11-car trains. The R62A's are fine for the 7 since they can run in 11-car configurations. This new LED feature will make things much better for the 7 not to mention the color and shapes would make it easier to distinguish over the current LCD side displays on the R142's.
