While most of these activities occured before and during the mid-1970's or so. It would not be a good idea to say that the #6 train has NEVER traveled to stops below the Brooklyn Bridge station.
There are times when certain train trips are scheduled and run - that do not show up on the usual subway maps.

Very true. Last summer, I was waiting for the 4/5 at Bowling Green and a 6 train that was in service, arrived at the Brooklyn bound part of the station and the conductor said that Bowling Green was the last stop on that 6 train. If it wasn't for it being my lunchbreak, I would have waited to see if the 6 was going to start at BG. I'd love to see the 6 go to Brooklyn at least once in my life. lol

I usually take the N, R, and W to the 6 at 59th. If you get on near the back of the N, R, or W, you pretty much can just slip upstairs to the uptown 6 at Lex. The 6 platform at Union Square just...bothers me.

I like the 14th st station because of its looks and that curve but I rater take the 6 from 59th st because its faster than ridding the N,R or W to 14th st. But most likely I take the E to 53rd and lex and hop on the 6 from there.

Not sure what Trip Planner says on this (depends on where you want to go) but I prefer the 59th/Lex transfer because it's easier to make. Go down the stairs instead of up over and down.
