I rode the A train yesterday and the subway cars looked very old - like from the 80s or 90s. Does anyone know if this is being done for a special reason?

Welcome aboard!! Did you took the picture?
Is roof on subway car dirty?
If that was case, it might be R-32 or R-38 cars?

Actually, Yuki, the R32 Brightliners have been with us since 1964 and the R38 since 1966.

there are no subway cars from the 80's or 90's on the A.

the A line has the R32, R38, and R44 models, built in 1964, 1967, and 1971 respectively

if you want cars from the 80's, take the 3 with the R62 model (1983), the 1 and 7 with the R62A model (1984), or the D and Q with the R68/R68A model (1986/1988)

All subway cars from the 90's are no longer in service

Well they were rebuilt in the 80's 90's so if this poster is looking at the builders plate they may see that year and think it was built then.

Identify the one that you saw. The first link shows a car that has been built in 1964, the second, a one from 1966, and the third one in 1971.

If you thought you saw an "old" car on the A, it was probably a R38.

After the R160s come in you will see newer trains than the R42 on the A. The A will still keep its R44s but it's unsure which trains will go on the A.

The A line won't be getting any new cars for a long while.

The MTA did the right thing in giving the W line R160's.the W
runs with the N line and if they wanted to change one train
from a W to an N,they could just like that.i don't think the A
line got it's grade because of the cars running on it alone.
you're just saying that the A line is a bad line because of the
cars it runs.the R44 cars are gonna go through a mini fix-up,
and they'll try to make the frame stronger.so they might run
R40 slants and R42 while this is happing.as for it being reliable,i never had a problem with it.

Possibly R46 or R68 on the (A) and what might run on the (C) if so?

The Broadway Line is the main tourist line of the city, from the Battery (Statue of Liberty) thru Wall Street, Macy's and Broadway Shows/42nd Street to Central Park.

The lines on Broadway should get the best kept equipment IMHO.

R68/A are from CI yard, don't see em going to the A line.(if ever)the only line i see the R46 on would be the E line.as for the C line, that might be a work in progress.

The R46 are staying in Jamaica Yard until the R179 order, which is still undergoing development.

So, the A will probably get R40M/R42 once the R38 are discontinued? Or perhaps more R32? (but from where, I am not sure...)

The R38 might go this year, the R32 from the A,C lines are going
to Jamaica YD once the phase II R32 start going.

so you mean "option I" described here?

http://www.nycsubway.org/cars/r160.html

so they will go to jamaica yard to be decommissioned?

then the R40M/R42 will move to the A/C lines as J/M/Z are replaced by R160B i guess...?

i still do kinda like the R38... i remember i was disappointed when i learned it was poorly built compared with the R32, as I always thought the look and general design elements on the R38 are superior...
