What do you like and dislike about the (5) train and its' interesting, varied, service pattern of terminals depending on time of day?
All I gotta say that it is more reliable than the 2 when it comes to intra-Bronx travel. At 149th, I take the downtown 4 to the uptown 2/5 to get from Bronx CC to Prospect Avenue. I always miss the 2 but most of the time, I end up with the 5. The 5 is better and it usually has more seats than that 2 train.

As i stated before only major issue with '5' is the late night terminal. 180/Morris Park is in middle of nowhere and I agree with MTA36 on 1 point.
Why does Dyre ave passengers have to change twice to connect to their primary stations in Manhattan? Extending it whether it's 149th/GC, 125th/Lex or even to Bowling Green would be fair.
Also the midday terminal weekdays on #5 should be either Utica or Flatbush Aves. too.

The 5 line is a joke. It is hindering the 2 line (especially with the ridiculous switching at 180st). During weekends it plays the role of shuttle. The 2 should be the Bronx express.

I'm not much of a 5 train fan, though it's cool in the Bronx but I really enjoy the thru express part during rush hour. I like the Dyre Ave-E 180th part too. Once it gets to the 149th St-GC part, then my alliegance goes to the 4.

Yes, the overnight shuttle should be extended to 149th-GC, this way the passengers would only have to transfer once instead of twice. As for midday service, I invite anyone to ride the 5 to Bowling Green at anytime during the midday hours and see how many people have to get off to wait for the 4. It's crazy. The 5 should be extended to Brooklyn dring the day as well.

I agree with everything said here. If the 5 is extended on middays and late nights (as well as evenings), it would be a great help for those heading from the Bronx to Brooklyn.

The #4 on weekends although busy is not 'crushloaded' in Brooklyn (unless it late)as it during week since the office/businesses on Court St are empty. Weekdays is another story and #5 during middays is really needed.
So the #5 termanting at Bowling Green on weekends till at least 11pm is fine.

I guess from the TA's point of view the #5 is a supplemental service - the operations of the #5 can be covered by the #2 and #4 routes - so when ridership drops why run the service? During the daytimes there is a need for the #5 to assist with the #2 and #4 lines, the ridership is there, but that's not the same during the later parts of the night.
This has nothing to do with the idea that some riders would prefer that the #5 run to certain places or at certain times. The "riders would prefer" that all routes operate at all times with 3 minute headways, where no fare is charged at all, but that is a dream world.
The Brooklyn segment of the number lines (former IRT lines) really only has three terminals - New Lots Avenue, Flatbush Avenue and Utica Avenue. (Yes, I know that in the past Atlantic Avenue was a terminal for both mid-day #4 and #5 lines, the early 1970's.) There is not a "separate place" to send #5 trains in a way does not interfere with other routes.
Since we do not have robot trains, each train needs two-crewmen, and after a while those salaries start costing some real money.

True great point as always Mike. However the #5 service at least during lunch hours weekdays (ie 10am-2pm)needs to be increased and thus all #5 trains from 6am-appx. 9pm monday-friday should run to Brooklyn period. Bowling green is fine for a southbound terminal after 9pm weekdays and all times weekends.
The #4 is mostly crushloaded SRO between Atlantic and Brooklyn Bridge/City Hall during middle of day weekdays and needs help.

I riding with R-7 here. Since you want to add cost and motormen then it is safe to say that it is a WASTE to have such an operation for what 6 stops!!!!!!!!!! meanwhile a person who is going to the NE Bronx on the LEX LIne has to take THREE TRAINS when that shuttle could SOMEWHERE MEET the parent line.

By definition when there are cutbacks and reductions in service due to the lack of ridership during the very late night and early midnight/morning hours -- that there will be some level of hardship for some riders.
For example - when many bus routes stop running throughout the city - I am sure that some riders would have a tougher time getting around, than they would at other times of the day or night. Everyone is not going to be satisfied.
Money does not grow on trees, and even if it did, there would still be questions about how best to spend such money. Not everyone is going to be satisfied with whatever decision is reached, even if a particular decision benefits many folk.

when you have a crowded station (180th street ) at late nights dealing with the weather especially if you just got off a warm train and now have to stand in the cold/ cautious etc. 12am waiting for a shuttle. No the right thing to do is make the transfer point somewhere logical. that is all i'm saying

Yeah since the area consists of non important people let them freeze in 15 degree weather, in an open station.
i bet you money that you find at least 50 people at that station at 12 am that is alot for 6 stations and this excludes the people who is disintrested with the format and flock to the dollar cabs at 238th , 241st streets to go east

AMEN to that brother!
Those Eastchester areas that the 5 line serves are very spooky late at night. So the 5 is like a great help for those heading to the Northeast Bronx. They won't have to set foot onto a dollar van.
