What are your thoughts on the new (3) train late night service from Times Square-42d Street to Harlem-148th Street that will be beginning soon?

I'm all for it. It will be a service improvement for Harlem and the West side riders. And a few more jobs for us.

Sounds like a good idea. It should relieve some of the crowding on the Bronx-bound (2) trains during the late nights.

It should run all the way to Brooklyn. This route is a glorified shuttle.

Excited as one can be. Moreso for my mom, cause she lives by the 145th St stop on the 3 and to know that the 3 is pretty much going to be a 24 hour line is answered prayer. It really sucked to have to take the 2 to transfer to a bus at 135th, if not take a cab in order to get home. This is going to help a lot of the people in and around the Esplanade Garden area and it's about time.

But it's way better than what it's been for God knows how many years.

Or Lex. A "compromise could be the #3 ran to the new South Ferry Terminal with #1, late nights only and have the #2 run express 24/7.

^^ for the most part, I agree w/ that.... the 3 doesn't really have to run to Brooklyn late nights w/ the '2' & the '4' (which goes to new lots via local in brooklyn) already doing so...
-------

back to the main idea of the thread...

Good... No more late night shuttle bus *expletive*... about time something was done to improve service on the 3 train.

Am I assuming correctly that the (3) will be a local, producing 6.5 minutes service, between Times Square-42d Street and 96th Street? I think it's great ten minutes service is coming to Lenox Avenue between 110th Street and 135th Street.

This would be great for Harlem residents to get to Times Square at any time they wish.

I don't think the 3 will be local with the 1 and 2 already running local. The 3 will probably terminate on the express tracks at Times Square, then relay between there and 34th street, then switch to the uptown express tracks to come back uptown.

agree 100% about what the routing will look like. If the TA wanted to create late night service on 7th Ave/Bway line this is what they should have done.

*7th Ave/Broadway route late night only under my plan.*

#3 Local between 148 St and South Ferry.

#2 express in Manhattan 24/7.

#1 remains the same.

Is there that much demand for service to South Ferry?

I think R-7's plan is more about allowing the 2 to run express 24/7 while keeping the same late night local headways on the Broadway 7th Ave. line.

Ah... I see. More evidence that there's a Biblical commandment I haven't heard of that says late night headways must be 20 minutes per line.

chambers or 14th street would be better- i'd run it express- its 23 or so min from 148 to 14th just over the 20 min hdway that could be solved with just TWO trains, say if it ran to 42nd, but by operating exp to 14 or even chambers., dont give me that switching backup nonsense- the next sb 2 is back at like 79th street lol- it could move greater number of ppl thru manhataan to points south whwere they could catch up to a 1 to south ferry for teh mad si ferry dash or to path trains- just a fw blks south or the A one blk east on church st. id sooner exit and re-enter system at a nearby station than wait til god know when for the 2. also having it go past 42nd will alleviate the crowding that will be made worse by making it a terminal station with crazy kids and drunks not wanting to exit for relay for example, or those who need a LIRR train one stop south at penn sta.

spkg of southerly extensions, id move for the 6 to bowling green too, it would give crew virtually nil SB recovery, but it would help riders wiating to go to fulton st for transfer to the A which'll be on a GO anyway, or for the ferry..

Late at night, the express is about 8 minutes faster than the local between 96th and Chambers. Are late night riders that pressed for time?

I actually think this is a good idea. Express service is restored and all of Manhattan is served entirely with this plan. It's a win-win for all of the 7th Avenue riders.

My instinct is to support a plan where the 1, 2, and 3 are all local, but I'm not sure about the levels of service. Next time I'm in Midtown at night and take the 1 home, I'll take note of ridership on the 2 vs. on the 1 to see if 10-minute headways on the Lenox branch are justified.

The work program should soon be available for us to look over. When I see it, I'll let you all know what exactly it is that the night 3 service is going to do.

The biggest plus is for South Ferry riders heading from SI.

I see - a short express run which will make the (3) (D) and (Q) the late night expresses and keep ten minutes service at the local stations. Makes sense.

SEPTA, that would be a great idea.
This plan needs to happen!!
The best (reasonable and realistic) subway improvement idea I've heard in a while.
If there is 24/7 express service it should be the (2) not the (3)

Late night 3 service would decrease crowding on the uptown 2, especially weekends.
Is it me or does it seem the 2 is the only train that is consistently standing room only at 2am.
