The shuttle relieves the crowding of the 7. It is also easier to transfer from the shuttle at Times Square.

The point of the shuttle is that the line was already there, and the 7 was a later addition, a way of giving IRT riders from Astoria and Corona a one-seat ride to Times Square.

Well, the shuttle is the original 42 Street crosstown line, being part of the original 1904 IRT subway. In 1918, when the IRT completed both the East Side and West Side main lines, the crosstown section remained in place as a shuttle to connect the two main lines. It has been since. The IRT Queensboro division (7) only was extended west of Grand Central in 1926-28.

I think the shuttle is useful. Coming from the 6 track at Grand Central, finding the 7 is a pain. It's easier to head to the shuttle.

From MNCR to the S it is easier, but from the 4/5/6 I feel it is easier to take the 7 rather than walk the whole corridor towards the S.

I agree with Grand Concourse.
I have taken both.
If you're in very end of Lex Av platform, 42nd St shuttle is far, but (7) isn't.
When you're close to 42nd St Shuttle, it's ok.
Plus on weekend, they ran 20 min each on Sat and 30 min on Sunday.
(S) is also backup for (7) when construction halts it from coming to Manhattan.
If there was no shuttle, it would be like this.
For example: It would be like this fantasy.
http://www.whereandy.com/pdfs/56543.9197202.pdf.
(Note to New Members: This is fictional posters.)
Passengers would not like to transfer to buses because crosstown buses take so long with busy heavey traffic from both side of tunnels.

The opposite is the case at Times Square, where it is easier to access the 7 from the Port Authority than the shuttle.

yeah. whenever i have to get to the 7th avenue or broadway lines, i use the shuttle b/c its closer to those lines (the shuttle ends into the 1 train and uses stock assigned to the 3 train) while the 8th avenue lines are closer to the 7 and its a hell of a long walk from the shuttle to the a train

1~3, N~W lines are close to 42nd St Shuttle, and A/C/E close to (7) at 42nd St-Times Sq/PABT.

Actually the IRT (1/2/3) is directly above the 7.

It's right where you come out of the BMT (N/Q/R/W) at the 42 St (north) end.

I think its purpose is mainly for MNR riders to access the West Side. It isn't easy to get to if you're coming from the (4), (5), or (6), so if I'm coming down on one of those, I take the (7) over. It's easily accessible, however, from the MNR platform of Grand Central.

The shuttle is directly accessible from Grand Central's main hall from the west corridor, while the 7 requires passage through the main subway concourse and down another 80 feet of escalators.

At Port Authority for those traveling to the East Side or Grand Central, the 7 is directly connected via the 41 Street corridor whereas the S shuttle requires a long walk via the IRT platforms, and BMT mezzanine or on street level via 42 Street.

where are you comming from??

in times square once you get of the hallway, or step out into the hallway (depending what end of the train you were on) head towards the N/W/R/Q and you should see it. just walk past that entrance and its right in front of you.

if your comming from GCT follows signs for the terminal, and right before you go through the turnstiles, you should see a passageway off to your left, thats the shuttle passege.

If coming from street level at Times Square, use the 24-hour entrance at the south side of 7 Av & 42 St which will have the shuttle at the bottom of the escalator beyond fare control.

The 42nd Street Shuttle(S) used to run 24/7(All Times) until Sunday September 10, 1995.

I've also worked the shuttle for more than just a few years. Trust me. It carries more than its share of the load. However, the station configuration, with regard to accessing the trains, is clumsy, to say the least. Track 1 is the easiest to deal with. Track 3 has an awkward access at Times Square where passengers have to walk around track 1. Track 4 is the absolute worst. NYCT has been mulling over a rebuild of the shuttle for many years, (which I believe is discussed at length in another topic). However, the last I heard, the shuttle (Times Sq station) renovation project is on the back burner for the time being.

It's still better than walking down two levels to get to the 7.

If you're going crosstown, the S shuttle is the choice. If traveling to Queens (or coming in and out of Port Authority), stay on the 7.

That’s a shame. IIRC the project was to have the trains stop just before they make their entrance into the station ie: terminate ‘in the tunnels’. Also building new platform[s] would allow tracks one and three to run 5-car trains or a set rather than single units and having to use them in 3 or 4-car trains. Track 4, I wonder if it will still run or not, my guess is that there won’t be a need for track 4 once trains on tracks 1 and 3 are expanded.
