No, I still wouldn't venture in parts of Washington Heights or Harlem after midnight. However, there are also middle class black and hispanice communities in the city.

Try East New York in Brooklyn and Far Rockaway to the list of neighorhoods to 'avoid' late at nights also.

Add to that list Williamsbridge and Wakefield (especially under the 2 line north of Gun Hill) and Morrisania's Project City (3rd Av between 168th-171st).

I have a classmate who lives on the other side of Morningside Park, who tells me everyone advises him to avoid the park after 10 pm. He still crosses it freely... but he said he once heard a gunshot.

As soon as i saw "any white people..." and looked at the J/M/Z i had a little laugh and knew there would be some controversy, even without knowing the rest of the title.

IMO, "white" people do ride the J/Z past Cypress Hills. Some get off @ Jam and transfer to the E. Other than that, not many. Most take the E from downtown than taking the J. I think that is more about the cleanliness of the train than about race. Other than that, i think the J/Z sees every kind of person just like other lines. It would be interesting to see the statistics of each line though, just out of curiosity.

I'm not a fan of political correctness for no reason either. But it's incorrect to assume that because an area is predominantly black that it is unsafe. It's better (and more accurate) to simply ask "is the (J) train safe past Cypress Hills?" And I'm still new here myself so, welcome to the boards!

Agreed, entirely. It's far too simplistic (and very inaccurate) to assume that the 'white' neighborhoods are 'safe', while the 'black' neighborhoods are 'dangerous'. For example, I'm Albanian, and I live in a neighborhood that is solidly (~90%) black and Hispanic. That doesn't mean I'm going to go around living my life in fear based on stereotypes. Of course, every neighborhood has its problems, but they're due to a number of other factors besides ethnicity.

To answer your question, I've only been on the (J)/(Z) three or four times, so I really can't say.

Washington Avenue from 163rd to 168th also gets tight. So does Prospect between St. Anthony of Padua and 169th.

I think the best thing to do is tryt to calm things down before it gets out of hand....just answer the question basically...this person didn't ask if it was safe for a white person to ride a J/Z train past Cypress Hills....I have seen white people ride past Cypress Hills in both directions, you're not gonna get away from them, if that is the issue, not that it should be, just like if it were the other way around, if this is gonna get hot and heavy, lt's try to keep this civil please, thanks in advance

There have been questions like this on the forum before.

So before the flame wars begin, and the back and forth about hidden meanings and messages, as well as plain stereotypical statements.

We all can sum up this issue with one very simple statement.

There are whole varieties of people who live and work in many areas of New York City. All of these people want to live, work and play in safe environments. Stereotyping certain people or certain neighborhoods, etc -- can lead to a false sense of security and safety. Walking anywhere in the region with dollar bills and jewelry hanging out of your pockets is not a wise thing to do. One must always be sensible about their behavior and watchful of the behavior of those around them, but not fearful.

So the best advice - assume that whatever place you visit (for whatever reason) is safe, but to be on your guard and watchful about those around you. New York City is too wonderful a place to limit ourselves because of our fears. While one should be sensible about their travels and wanderings, using any stereotypical based information can lead to very wrong assumptions about one's real safety.

This was a simple basic answer, enough said,
Mike

You could have researched that yourself very easily by visiting the Census Bureau website (www.census.gov) and entering the zip codes in question.

good lord, not this *expletive* about the J/Z again.... some stigma's will never go away...

looks like you got your answer, threadstarter... but to make things easier for yourself, don't word questions like that... I think you knew good & well at least someone on here wouldn't take the question so innocently as you may have intended it to be....

It's one thing when you're talking amongst peers, but on a public forum... not a good look..... think to yourself, would you have asked that same question concisely for ppl. to hear, word-for-word, somewhere where there's a mixed creed/race of people, like say... on the subway... at cypress hills... on the J/Z line ;\)

This is a dumb question. I've been on the train for the whole route. Nothing has happened to me. Why do you ask this kind of question? There are white people that live in East NY, Bushwick and Williamsburg. So I don't like the demographics of this question.

The 121 Street stop is a brief walk from beautiful Kew Gardens and Metropolitan Avenue. If you're coming from Wall Street or lower Manhattan, the J is an alternative (although quite slow) to the packed express E or F trains.

Kew Gardens is beautiful. 121st Street is also a short walk from Lefferts Boulevard which leads to Richmond Hill and Ozone Park.

Kew Gardens is beautiful, and it's not far from Forest Hills, which is gorgeous too, but you need money for both nabes.

I think its funny you choose the Cypress Hills Station. I think there are still 2 or 3 white people living in Woodhaven. ;-)

The sad part about it is it's truth at one point.

I grew up watching on lines like the 4,5,6, 2,3 knowing well that on a crowded train my chances of getting a seat was strong after 86th street on the Lex lines and 96th street on the lenox lines that was the way it was until the harlem boom. Still today you know if you see a white person on the 2 line that they are getting off at 180th pelham pkwy maybe allerton , and on the 5 they are getting off at pelham pkwy , morris pk, 180th street and now a few is at Dyre.

the 4 train is woodlawn , moshula , bedford pk,

the 6 line is probally the most diverse line in the bourough from start to finsih , the L is diverse,

times is changing we have one common factor ...

HIGH A** RENT!!

Well, I take the B13 to Cypress Hills or Crescent Street, and get the J there. Or if I get the B20, I take it to Broadway Junction. It's not that I choose it, I have to travel somehow.
But like I said, this is a bad post, since people of any race can live anywhere. The Bronx has a lot of white people (my family is in Fordham) and I've seen black people in Ridgewood, where I live, where it's predominantly white. So this is not accurate. Besides, Woodhaven does have a lot of white people there, there are just more Hispanics and Asians there.

Ragazzapazza it was someone named 'crazy casey' who created this thread. She has since disappered. I feel deep inside she an angry 'white woman' who angry because she afford to live in Greenwich Village and asked at best an inseative question.

Ragazzapazza she also claims she 'did nothing wrong' as 'she a beautiful looking woman worried about her safety.'

You'd guess incorrectly if you were riding the train with me. I'm Albanian, and my home station is Simpson Street.
