And there's talk of resurrecting the 3 shuttle for late nights. Actually, most of what we call shuttles are not that in the true (railroad)sense of the word. The one that best qualifies is the Times Square - Grand Central shuttle. The late night 5 is not truly a shuttle. It is more like a short line, and so are the Rockaway and Lefferts "shuttles". So I would agree that maybe the only one to carry the "S" should be the Times SQ - Grand Central. As has been already mentioned, "8" is too close and easy to confuse with "A" if not enunciated properly, and the passengers already have enough difficulty navigating their way through the 12 lines that stop in Times SQ.
