Grand Concourse Grand Concourse Lord of the Post Registered: 06/26/02 Posts: 17900 Loc: Manhattan	The main 3 shuttles serves a purpose and are more or less well used. Also as far as other lines like the 5/M/R at night they serve segments up to a transfer point so riders can continue on their trip on another line rather than to run that line over the segments that are already covered.

The only thing I don't like is that they all use (S) as their designation. My solution would be to make the (S) the designation for the 42nd Street shuttle, and the others, appropriately, (H) for Howard Beach and (P) for Prospect Park. _________________________ I never thought Prospect was between Cypress and Brook!

I would rename the Times Sq/Grand Central the #8 so rider know it's an "IRT" aka Numbered line. I would call the Franklin Ave Shuttle the "P" since it serves Prospect Park and "P" has not been used yet. I would rename both the Rockaway Park Shuttle and rush hour "A" Rockaway Park extension branch to/from Manhattan the "H".

Yeah, if the borough of the shuttle is specified, I don't think there should be any confusion. I never refer it to the S train, I always say "Yeah, let me just shuttle over." Although the 42nd Street Shuttle could be called the 8 train, I honestly think there would be a lot of errors in communication. I think the 42nd Street Shuttle should remain "S" because it is very well-known. The "P" for Franklin Avenue makes sense. And there should definitely be a change for the A train shuttles. I mean if you are not from New York and for some reason need to go all the way out to Queens, you need to know that differentiation. I am sure enough people thought "Oh I will take the A train to Howard Beach and take the AirTrain to JFK", only to wind up in Ozone Park. The "A" should go to Far Rockaway, the "H" to Rockaway Beach, and the "K" to Lefferts. To avoid having to use the (K) designation, here's my proposal for the continuation of the (A) beyond Euclid Ave: The (C) is extended beyond Euclid, to include the following stops: A/C Grant A/C 80th A/C 88th A/C Rockaway Blvd C 104th C 111th C Ozone Park/Lefferts. The (A) continues on to Far Rockaway, with these stops: A/C Grant A/C 80th A/C 88th A/C Rockaway Blvd A Aqueduct Racetrack A Aqueduct/North Conduit Ave A/H Howard Beach/JFK Airport A/H Broad Channel A Beach 67th A Beach 60th A Beach 44th A Beach 36th A Beach 25th A Far Rockaway/Mott. The (H) extends from Howard Beach to Rockaway Park, with these stops: A/H Howard Beach/JFK Airport H Beach 90th H Beach 98th H Beach 105th H Beach 116th/Rockaway Park. _________________________ I never thought Prospect was between Cypress and Brook!

Actually, most of what we call shuttles are not that in the true (railroad)sense of the word. The one that best qualifies is the Times Square - Grand Central shuttle. The late night 5 is not truly a shuttle. It is more like a short line, and so are the Rockaway and Lefferts "shuttles". So I would agree that maybe the only one to carry the "S" should be the Times SQ - Grand Central. As has been already mentioned, "8" is too close and easy to confuse with "A" if not enunciated properly, and the passengers already have enough difficulty navigating their way through the 12 lines that stop in Times SQ. _________________________ Photobucket:- http://s265.photobucket.com/albums/ii205/Relay-Metro
