I was surprised to see no one put up a thread about the grade coming in for the L train. The MTA is releasing the full results later today but some blogs have already started to discuss the info that is leaked out.

The L train graded out a C which is a slight improvement from the the T train's grade earlier this month. I blogged about it on Transit Blogger so check it out! Oh don't forget to bookmark the site & come by daily. I usually update it at least once a day. Comment away as well & tell people you know as it is catered for everyday riders as well as transit fans.

I can see why the L scored higher than the 7 (only because of the newer cars, though), but what I DON'T see is why it still got a pathetic C.

It probably scored low because of crowds, delays, and dirty stations.

If I had to rate the (L) on that scale, I'd give it either a C+ or a B-.

It deserves no higher than a D+. It is one of the most inconsistent lines. The crowding is unbearable.

Lex is harder marker on NYC Transit than any of my professors/Teachers in Grad school.lol

I did stay & lived for a couple of months in Bushwick/East Williamsburg area when i was looking for a 'permament apartment' in year 2004 and even back then it was getting unbearable. The trick i learned going to work was 'avoid the L at all costs between 730am-10am and 430pm-7pm' weekdays.

More than the crowds itself most of the stations in Brooklyn on the "L" are the worst kept(i admit the lasttime i rode that line was in March of this year)and diriest stations in NYC system and probably reason riders gave it a low score.
This line needs CBTC in worst way as they are 'no alternative routes at all" due to breakdowns, etc. Even on Lex line you can use the #6 Local as back-up to the cattle SRO crowds on the #4 and #5.

I agree with Sebbie though. The "L" as of Fall 2007 gets no higher than a "C-plus" grade with the new trains and frequent service (at least during rush hours it runs every 3-4 minutes)but the crowds and filthy stations are it's biggest downfalls.

I decided to have this week's Q.O.T.W focus on the L train & its rider report card. The question is what grade do you think the L will get next year on its rider report card?

You can vote here !

Thanks!

Offtopic- I looked at the board and the last post said "FamousNYLover - 1 minute and 43 seconds ago"
"1 43"
"143"
"R143"

Wow. How ironic. And we're talking about the L train.

I'll like to think of the "L" like the #7, but there is a big difference in capacity. The #7 has a three track terminal on the other end and it runs as a three track line. This provides options in case a problem might occur.

If only the "Jamaica Line" could lend some of it capacity to the "L" line, things would be much better. Too bad things ain't that easy.

Also, skipped stop might work if the passengers were distributed across each station. But the waiting time will double. However, passenger distribution might be better.

Other than that, not much could be done, except building an underground express, which is cost prohibited.

I'm in favor of sending the V down Chrystie Street Connection to the Williamsburg Bridge and then Myrtle Avenue Line, and eliminating the M. That way, the Jamaica Line will give Williamsburgers a one-seat ride to Midtown.

I'm not for this idea since it will totally eliminate my "shuttle" plan for this section.

he wants the M to terminate on the unused upper level of the Myrtle Av station so it doesn't crossover the Broadway el holding up the J/Z service.
Basically turning the M into a shuttle only.

It already is when the M is running as a shuttle though.
And I thought that the upper level at Myrtle Avenue carries no track or roadbed?

that's the thing, he wants to reopen the upper level so the M stays isolated from the J/Z lines. This essentially makes the M a 24/7 shuttle.
Which solves nothing other than making the L crowded as it is or forcing the J/Z to take on displaced M riders.

This will have little impact on the "L" line, except that it will distribute passengers better. But it will have a positive impact on the J/Z. Instead of the J/Z running 5 minutes each, it will run 3 minutes each. And instead of the "M" running every 10 minutes, the shuttle will run every 5 minutes.

I know the downside is adding another transfer. But the wait will be reduce significantly.

It is simple as one.. two.. three.. to build that roadbed. The infrastructure is already there to do it. All you have to do is to lay tracks and BAM!! your done.

The cost savings becomes obvious once these 8 car trains are replaced with 2 car trains.

Then they should build that single track bed on Jamaica Avenue, so express service is provided out of Queens. This will greatly make the "EL" more viable.

You'll have to reduce the number of cars on the J/Z for it to be viable, which makes it only more of a hassle for people who don't use the M.

No offense, but that idea is horrible. You already have the L taking on M riders from Wyckoff and to turn the M into a 24/7 shuttle you are going to put too great a strain on the already maxed out L line and then making at least a one seat ride to Delancy a 2 seat ride. This helps no one other than screwing M riders further. Plus how do you know the upper level can be rehabed to handle a train car that weighs several tons compared to when only wooden cars used the Myrtle el?

V-M combo is a far better solution.

Wait. When you said the J/Z run 5 mintues each, do you mean both trains have 5 minute headways? Because if both would then have 3 minute headways...does Jamaica Avenue need THAT much service? I think we should keep it at 4. The E has 4 minute headways, and it's in pretty good condition IMO. I don't know. I'm not thinking straight right now.

But making the M a 24/7 shuttle only further frustrates the riders that want a one seat ride to Manhattan.

No, the J and Z have ten minute headways each. Skip-stop saves so little time that if all the Z's were converted into extra J's, the headway would be exactly five minutes.
