it's almost done. According to New York 1 News, NYC Transit officals said yesterday the construction of the 'new' 2-track South Ferry Terminal for the #1 is 'ahead of schedule' and may now open 6 months ahead of the oringal planned opening in 2009. The MTA tells NY1 News that the 'new station' could be be open by late next year (2008) instead.

Most of you know that the MTA is buliding a new South Ferry Terminal right?

Highlights include:
1)new Station can now hold 10-car trains instead of currently only 5-cars(1/2 train)with 2 tracks.
2)ADA Accessible
3)New "In station" transfer via walkway to the Whitehall "R/W" station.
4)'Enivormental Control' aka Air Condidtioned.
5)No Taxpayer monies from NY residents used to bulid this new station costing appx. $500 Million. Paid for from the '9/11' Rebuliding monies passed by the Congress and President Bush around 2002 or '03.

The only negative is that on most weekends(except for the usual Christmas/New Years "Holiday suspension of non-esstinal G/O's)is the current plan of the suspension of late night & weekend #1 service between South Ferry and Chambers/14th Streets will continue till then. I wish the TA could update the maps/station signs saying the #2 and #3 runs local and no #1 service.

Any Reactions?

My only question is this? The '4/5' and even sometimes the #6 Lex lines terminating at Bowling Green also uses the current SF to turnaround to go from Downtown to Uptown? What happens to those tracks/the 'old' South Ferry Station>

Looks like the track maps at http://www.nycsubway.org will have to be updated...(they really need it anyway)...

Good point, there might possibly be a hidden set of layup tracks, or something. Just throwing some thoughts out there.

I read somewhere the loops will not be dismantled, just the current SF outer loop station will be closed to the public. The 5 train will still turn around at South Ferry.

From the map on the MTA site, it looks like the 1 will branch off onto new track and then cross under the existing lines to the new station which appears to be partly beneath the existing loop

I better get used to an all local 3 train on weekends then (already am though). As far the South Ferry loop, the 5 still needs it to terminate at Bowling Green, so I think they're just going to close the station and keep the loop in service.

Please be aware that the recent and upcoming closures of South Ferry have absolutely nothing to do with the new station being built. They are being caused by station renovation work at Chambers St and by work at the WTC site.

The tracks will remain, as will the original station (which is landmarked).

Oh Ok Alex. My bad (about thinking that the #1, 2 & 3 line weekend detours was related to the SF station project)

The loop will still remain for G.Os, emergencies and other special requirements.

Why can't the station signs/nyc subway maps 'update' signs that on weekend the #1 terminate at 14/7th & #2/3' goes local during this period?

Might be off-topic, and I remember one time after 9-11, when I got subway after 9-17, when everything was local, tourist was waiting for South Ferry train well as WTC train.
And also warning sign for South Ferry should be posted by the door, well as sign. Warning sign should be posted on the map, too.
On Subway Map, make map little larger like maybe size of street map, and move St. George details up and have South Ferry details with station warning, so tourists would know.
On the (1) train schedule, on the front cover, under train schedule, they should have sign that says:

NOTE:
ATTENTION, SOUTH FERRY PASSENGERS, YOU MUST IN FIRST FIVE CARS OF THIS TRAIN. IF YOU'RE IN THE REAR, PLEASE TRANSFER AT NEXT STATION (242ND-RECTOR STS), PASS THE CONDUCTOR'S CAR AND GET ON THE SAME TRAIN. PLEASE DO NOT CUT ACROSS THE CARS. THANK YOU.

Agreed Yuki. Just like in first 'few years' of Manhattan Bridge reconstruction project that took nearly 20 years the TA had a 'special bullet' on system wide maps. Why not for the South Ferry project?

There are two stations in the subway system where an otherwise full train can not open all of its doors to a platform, that is South Ferry and 145th Street-Lenox Avenue. On the approach to each station, conductor announcements are made. At the Chambers Street and Rector Street station riders are allowed the chance to move to the first five cars. On the #1 trains, there are signs in each car that tell riders to move to the first five cars.

Long time ferry riders know to be at the front of the trains - that is the situation at South Ferry, Whitehall Street, and at Bowling Green. In each case the front of the train is closest to the exits when one needs to run to meet the ferry.

Temporary service diversions due to short term station renovation and GO's are not placed on the subway map. Since this service change to due to the renovation of Chambers Street a map change is not needed. Many stations have been renovated without a map change. The 20-year Manhattan Bridge diversions required major changes to the map, as well as the Lenox Avenue Tunnel rebuilding project a decade ago.

Mike

What forein language on MTA's "The Map" has and South Ferry shortage sign?
Warning about first car only on (1) train on the south-north end of (1) train is not good location to be.
Last stop long time ago, due to the General Orders wait in past when 1 train was at terminating at Chambers St, and downtown (2) and uptown (5), making local stops between Bowling Green & Chambers St, when I was waiting for either train, even though they warn rear car riders at at Bowling Green, Chambers St & Rector St, especially tourists in last car on South Ferry thought it did not stop and some tourists thought it did not stop.
This was way past when weekend G.O. allow uptown (2) going local from 96th to South Ferry, then uptown (5) from South Ferry to 96t St via Lexington Avenue.
All (1) train sign should be upgrade, with MTA should also introduce sign at all station from first to fifth car,
"BOARD THIS CAR FOR SOUTH FERRY."

Well, they're upgrading the station, so in about a year this won't be necessary.

There already is a notification to the left of the schedules of the trains that notifies the map reader that Weekend and Late Night 1,2,3,4, and 5 service is subject to change due to work on the new South Ferry and Fulton Transit Center projects.

How hard is it to build a 10 car station at 145th Street?

Well there's no need to since 148th is just north of the station. And how many people uses 145th? Just announce everyone to move up to the 1st 5 cars to enter or exit the train, that's all.

Speaking of South Ferry, now Manhattan-bound (1) train is now terminating at 34th St instead of express track to downtown 14th St, then express back up to Times Sq.
I wonder how would it terminate at 34th St?

If you put every weekend GO on the map then it would be confusing. And this GO doesn't happen every weekend.

There's a track between the express tracks and some track switches north of 34th Street. The train will come in on the southbound express track and when it leaves, it can switch to either the uptown local or express track.

There is a crossover from the local track to the express track just south of Times Square. That way the #1 can use the center island platform at 34th St to be the terminal. To return uptown the train would use the spur track (between the 2 express tracks) towards Times Square then cross over to the uptown express track and then uptown local track just south of Times Square.

Hi all,
I came to visit the New York subway the last June and I am comming again probably in July this year.

I want to document more deeply the soony abandoned old South Ferry loop station. I'd like to make som HD videos and enough photos for me.

The last info about the new SF terminal opening date I have is August 2008. Is it correct? I mean if I am in New York in July am I able to access the current SF loop station?

Thank you in advance.

Welcome to the boards, Filip [CZ]. You will probably be able to visit the old station, but you shouldn't take your time when it comes to making those videos - it's still not clear exactly what date the new station will open.
