im not a super paranoid person, and i know the importance of being aware of my surroundings and everything, but I am a young female so I thought I would ask this question for my own peace of mind...

I am moving to the Marcy/Broadway area, and will be taking the J (alone) from Marcy stop to Sutphin Blvd in the mornings/afternoon and the reverse in the evenings/at night. I have heard horror stories about how the J is so much more dangerous than other trains in brooklyn and is full of crazy people and others who stab and rob, etc.

Any truth to this? Any reason why I would be more vulnerable on the J than I have been on the D or R for the past year in brooklyn? should i expect any more sketchiness than I am already used to on a day-to-day in NYC?

The Franklin K. Lane students that get on at 75st-Elderts Lane are a nuisance. They usually ride in the afternoon. A few undesirables ride the J during the wee hours (1-4 AM). However, if it's early evening you shouldn't have a problem. Just to be safe ride in the conductor car (near the middle).

I'm not gonna lie to you.... I find that there's more nuttier ppl (most of which are homeless) that ride that line... but as far as dangerous, to the tune of robbing & killing... c'mon... You watch the news don't you... how many ppl. do you hear getting killed on the J on a daily basis? I know a lot of rapes go unreported, but I SERIOUSLY doubt you'll have to worry about getting raped; the J isn't THAT much more dangerous a line to ride than the D, R, or any other line....



See, I'm not a woman.... and I know you're new to the board... maybe someone like Miss W supporter, or Chemmy can shed insight from a female's point of view.... But if you (still) want my point of view, you should be wary of ppl. anywhere you go... How does that saying go, "if you can make it in new york, you can make it anywhere"... somethin like that... lol... anyway, as far as "any more sketchiness".. nah....

and Lex gave you real good advice... if you plan on riding ANY line late @ night (from about 1-5am or so), just ride in the conductor's car; the middle of the train

I think you should follow your gut instinct and ride in the conductor's car if you're going to be on the late night 2, A, or J trains, especially when you're in Brooklyn on those trains.

The Best thing to do is ride in the C/R's car going Manhattan Bound its the 4th car and 5th car towards Parsons. The first car is also a good place because lots of people ride in the first car and you can always contact the T/O in case of an Emergency. I work on the J Line evenings and it doesn't seem too have any more problems then the rest of the lines. However late nights they do have a good share of robberys on the line.

I never ridden on late night, but in evenings, I usually ride on front car (engineer) and conductor's car)
On weekend (L), ride on front car. Sometimes J has lots of constructions on late night, so check MTA website, click on Service Advisiory.
At any stations or any trains, use 24 hours exit. 24 Hours exits has station agent working 24 hours.

I've heard stories on the C line, the L line and the Bx trains regarding safety. I never heard anything on the J line, but of course, you can't be too careful.

Honestly, I stopped taking the J regularly about 3 years ago, but I ride it atleast once a month, and it seems pretty safe. The students at Elderts lane are usually going towards brooklyn in the afternoon...either way, you really shouldn't have a problem on the J.

I ride the Bronx trains all the time, and of course, I've heard stories. Still, I have yet to encounter anything myself, and I've lived in the Bronx my entire life. Either the trains are incredibly safe or I'm just very lucky.

I used to live on the J and rode all hours day & night. Best advice I can give you is to ride in the conductor's car. As with any NYC subway line, at times, you will encounter undesirables but being in the C/R's car at least keeps you somewhat closer to others. You will often find that that car is the most crowded too - with good reason.

However, I've never had any problems on any trains no matter the hours I was riding. Just be smart.

You also got to look out for the crushload of students traveling between Broadway Junction and Jamaica Center, heading to Southeast Queens.
