They don't impress me much. The chimes are working now maybe 3/4 of the time.

Go go R-32!!

I think that they are good cars. Not GREAT but good cars. There actually those cars are in my top 4 in the System. I like them. I wish they would go to the Bronx.

They are reliable cars to me, as I've ridden them so many times with no problems. I'd rather take a look at their brethren, the R44.

They aren't my favorite car class, but they are reliable.

The state gave them long-distance trains. The TA needed them so they tookem. They were converted into subway cars. Thats why the wallpaper is there.

Who knows if the SAS line was to be forged then most likely the line may borrow some R46's from the Jamacia yard [FYI: only going on limited info - not certain 100%] ;\)

I think the R-68's are going to live and die on the B D. So the SAS is your only chance to see the R-46 in the Bronx.

But I think the R-160 is going to hold down the SAS.

Weren't the R44/46 built for the 70s SAS?

I read somewhere that they were. At least some people on SubTalk feel they were built for Second Avenue.

The R-11 prototype was the car that was going to be built for the second avenue subway. I know that much.

If the R-44/46 was going to be built for the SAS is debateable.

Yeah, the R11...too bad it never got used for it.

As for the R44/46, I think you can debate about it only if you have any sort of evidence, otherwise you'll just be rambling.

Yes, they were built to run on the S.A.S. because there were meant to be 80(hard to believe)mph stretches built in, and those cars had to handle them with easy without blowing motors. The R-11 (million dollar train as it was famed) was to do the same task, both never got the chance to fulfill their task. Sorry FarRockaway, this is fact.

Found proof:

Feast your eyes on page 21 of "New York City Subway Cars" By James Clifford Greller.

"The NYCTA was next to be pushed into the future with the new R-44 order. This was also to be a car designed for the again projected Second avenue subway."

The 80MPH test run blew out 4 motors but the train hit 80MPH.

In theory the train was to run at speeds up to 80 MPH but I am guessing 60 is much more realistic.

Well, congratulations! But I'm guessing the R44's won't be used when the SAS is actually completed! \:D

I doubt the R-44's will be around (the R-11's didnt make it), and at the rate they're going, the r-160's probably wont be either

didnt they test the 44/46s on LIRR when they first came out and they also had all that 1976 usa200year crap. anyway regarding 80-or 60mph there really isnt anywhere in the sysytem that can get barely 60 let alone more- in service anyway.

1) the 60th street tubes- have seen 62 in r68a
2) along the a line: NB btw96-110 as train dips under NB loc at 103rd/ also SB 50-42st have gotten 50mph-though feels faster than is/ ditto for SB bwynass-high st got 53/ also NB btwn rkwy-ralph torwrd utica/ though timers screw u here could easily have 60 w/o them- held to 35/the bdchannel strech barely 50- avg only like 42-45
3) on the NB just b4 newkirk, can get 50 since timers not big issue but station is narrow pltfm so early brkg is usu. prudent/ SB b4 sheepshead bay can get 48 or so- feels faster in bouncy r40slant than 40m/68s
4) the 4/5 nb exp btw 86-125 but timers around 96th st and again at 118th street or so- hold speed to 45-50/ sb lvg 86th is same prob. max at like 47
5) 2/3 sb 72-42 can get 51 if brkg not premature, most to slow right out 50th st- u can go another 500'+
the 6line is garbage/ the 5 dyre brch will yield no more than 44. exp trk on the 2 WPR SB feels like train is gonna rock off the trk at 40mph
4getting anything r we?
so much for RAPID transit
