So I took my bf to ride the City Hall loop yesterday. Looked like some of the skylights had been removed. It was still a nice ride. The C/R didn't check the train so we just sat there. It was a nice ride smile

You're lucky the train didn't go OOS (probably the Worst Case scenario), the C/R didn't check the train or there were people in the station.

Why would it go OOS on the evening rush hour as it was in the City Hall loop anyway (where all 6 trains turn)? besides, there's always the emergency intercom.

I suppose this is somewhat true, I guess I stand corrected (partially).

Oh, I would go, except I don't want to go to jail nor to I want to be stuck in a train that's going to the yard.

Well if its during the rush then the odds of it goin to the yard is pretty slim, but there is still that chance tho.

Anybody seen on an OOS 6 train going through the
loop won't go to jail.from what i'v been told,the
IRT City Hall loop is on revenue trackage.all you
have to do is ask a T/O or C/R if you could stay on the train.

Once a 5 goes into the loop, there is always the chance that it could either come out onto the West side or not come out at all. The second choice would, of course, force all following 5s to go to Brooklyn. A 6 in City Hall loop can ONLY come back out at Brooklyn Bridge.

While it is revenue trackage chances are if you ask the T/O or C/R they will tell you no, that it is not revenue trackage and you cannot ride. You might luck out and get one who will let you ride and even turn the car lights off so that you can see the station better.

Your best bet is to be at the back few cars of the train and be seated when it gets to Brooklyn Bridge. The crew rarely checks the train and the same for platform personnel.

You do run the risk (minor but a risk nevertheless), however, of the train being placed on one of the storage tracks just south of the station (doesn't happen too often) or the train being sent "light" (or not in service) back uptown.

This is always such an interesting topic. laugh Glad you successfully made the trip, Chemmy. I would have to try this myself if I ever come to NYC! :p In the meantime, a great New Yorker sent me a video tape he made in City Hall Station when it was open for the Subway Centennial. The conductors on the trains sure look surprised at all the lights and activity. eek

Yea,most likely they'll say that.I'v been to the IRT City Hall station twice,
so me doing that might be rare.

Sweet your bf is a transit buff!

Did he enjoy the loop?

would be cool to have a g/f who is...that aint so ez tho...as it is not that many ppl have this hobby , & most who do are guys...Back o/t, that station is beautiful, but would prob cost a fortune to use in rev service again(needs gap fillers, since ppl are way more loooking to sue then in 1904, & only holds 4-5 cars, like SF)

I like City Hall, but it isn't really justified to reopen it.

City Hall Loop is revenue trackage, and everyone is allowed to ride through it. There's an employee memo instructing C/R's that they no longer have to check to make sure all people get off the train, and that they should make an announcement stating that Brooklyn Bridge - City Hall UPTOWN platform is the next stop.

Unfortunately, most C/R's either haven't read this memo, or they choose to ignore it.

But still, there is a chance the train may go OOS while navigating the loop.

You would know about it...believe me...if it's such a revenue track...they will tell you if the train is going to go OOS

No, there isn't. All (6) trains that enter the loop emerge uptown on Track 4. Just as all (1) trains that enter the South Ferry loop will emerge uptown at Rector Street on Track 4. Have you ever seen a (1) train go out of service after discharging at South Ferry? It just doesn't happen.

And in any case, if a (6) train DID have to go out of service at Brooklyn Bridge - City Hall, they would make an announcement, and THEN the train crew would still be required to walk through the entire train and make sure everybody got off.

He enjoyed it and thought Worth Street (abandoned station) was cool too. He's not a transit buff per se... But can you help it when you're dating me?
