I saw3 and rode on 2 R160 R trains today....with their FIND working! I wonder if the MTA is trying to get more R46's over the the A line to get all the R44's off daily service! That's the plan. I think that's what they're doing putting R160s on R, and sending some R46 to replace R44s from A. Now I've been seeing some empty R44s going uptown, so that's a sign for retirement. A trains regularly deadhead uptown to resume service, so those R44s are not necessarily going to storage. However, 64 R44s have been retired already, bringing the R44 fleet down from 272 cars to just 208. Putting the good R44's in storage and or getting rid of the bad ones off the A line seems to be major now..
I read in the of the city's free news papers yesterday that the MTA is trying to buy more cars, not sure if its more R160's or R179's That's referring to the R179s and R188s. The R179s are for retiring the remaining R32s and R42s after the R44s are all gone while the R188s are for CBTC on the 7 line. However, these car orders are years away.

I saw more R160s on the George Washington Bridge last night being delivered by trailers. The numbers were 9971, 9972, and 9973; I couldn't see the others.
On another note, why were these cars delivered by truck? It seems a very inefficient way to bring rolling stock into the system. I recall seeing new cars in the 1980s arriving by ship in Brooklyn and being rolled out into the freight tracks off the piers that connect at 39th Street onto the West End line. It would seem that the current method leaves a very large carbon footprint and must cost a fortune to deliver one by one.
Just a few thoughts. They are delivered by truck cause they come from upstate NY. Didn't the Alstom R68s also come from ustate and weren't they delivered by ship?

can't wait for the R32 to appear on the new M! Slim chance of that happening. Are there enough 8 car R160s to cover the new M?
