CBTC is planned for the 7 line only at the moment. Full implementation of ATS is the idea for the 1/2/3 (almost there already, several dispatcher jobs were cut recently along those lines and also on the Lex). CBTC is something that really has to be from end to end, NYCT does not consider it safe for CBTC to be operating entering terminals, so between 6-8Av and between Rock Parkway and 105th on the (L), train operators assume full control at all times.

The first order of R188s is for twenty-three cars - two - eleven car trains. The odd car will be placed in a ten car set of converted R142As.

Three test trains total.

True, but it's always good to have a substantial, concrete link.

Not so on the 'L' line - The T/O must use 'ATO' (Automatic Train Operation) mode at all times - if available, even entering terminals (Rockaway Parkway & 8th Avenue included). The only time the T/O should not be in 'ATO' mode is upon LEAVING the terminal - in order to conduct his/her safe braking test.

There are also three modes in 'CBTC' (Computer Based Train Control):
'ATO'
'ATPM'
'BYPASS'

'ATO' is when the computer operates the consist using transponders on the roadbed to communicate with trains in front and behind of it.

'ATPM' (Automatic Train Protection - Manual) is when the T/O is operating the consist but the computer is assuring the safe operation of the train (speed restrictions, signal overruns, work gangs. etc.)

'BYPASS' is the mode in which the computer is taken offline and the T/O is totally responsible for the safe operation of the train with NO computer oversight (a la all pre-R142 equipment).

'ATS' (Automatic Train Supervision) is 92% operable in the IRT except for a line or two in the Bronx (don't remember off the top of my head).

'CBTC' is planned for both the '7' and the 'F' and it will be implemented in phases.

Hope that helps clarify the situation.
