On Friday May 27, 2005, the (9) was discontinued.

Started on August 21, 1989, the (1) and (9) provided skip-stop service on Broadway but only between West 242d Street-Van Cortlandt Park and 137th Street-City College.

Between 137th Street and South Ferry, (1) and (9) trains made all stops.

When introduced, (9) trains ran rush hours and middays until 1994 when service was shortened to rush hours only.

From Tuesday September 11, 2001 until September 15, 2002, (9) service was suspended. (1) trains ran West 242d Street-Van Cortlandt Park to 14th Street, runnin local to 96th Street and express to 14th Street until September 19, 2001 then West 242d Street-Van Cortlandt Park to New Lots Avenue

Intersting article on the (9) from Wednesday May 25, 2005: http://www.nytimes.com/2005/05/25/nyregion/25train.html

There were just too many high-ridership stops up there for it to work in the end. Also the 1/9, 1, and 9 markers are still visible.

The 1 train works perfectly without the 9. It is one of the fastest local trains around.

The 1 and 6 are routinely the best locals in the city, when it comes to cleanliness, OTP (they even have arrival times for it now at many stations), and amount of service. The 6 gets the edge for announcements and tech trains, the 1 for seat availability. A/C is usually better on the 6, but there are indeed some very cold cars on the 1, especially if the train was partially closed at 242.
