Not really related to just the G, but since I was riding the G when I noticed it...

I rode in R46 car #6114 the other day and noticed about half the seats had a fresh blue coat of paint, similar to the color of the R160/R143/R142 bench seats. I was thinking at first they were new seats, but then I saw someone had scratchitti'd one of the seats, and you could see the old orange color was there beneath the blue.

Does anyone know if this is part of the SMS of the R46? Will we see seats to match the R160 (color-wise at least) on our R46 fleet soon?

There is no SMS for blue seats. They just decided not to paint the seats. Blue is the color they come from the manufacture, it was decided to save money and not paint them.

Some R46s' also get the black speckled floors ala the R62 and R68. Some of the old floors are rather spongy.

But then why was there orange underneath the blue? Further, why isn't there blue under the orange when people scratch into the existing seats? It really looked like a new top coat.

I've only seen blue seats with no orange underneath. The seats are shaped differently as well, so they are not the exisitng seats that were painted over.

They are shaped like the 142 and up equipment seats.

The blue seats on the R46 [car 5666 to name one] are bucket seats. They are the same as the bucket seats on the R44-68s. The only difference I think is that the 'divider' between the seats is not as rigid.

The blue seats you are talking about are in fact the old seats with a fresh coat of blue paint. It is the same color of the NTT seats; the MTA wants all their seats to be one color to maintain uniformity and cut down on paint costs. Whenever a seat is in bad shape and needs to be repainted it will be repainted in blue. It is part of the R46 SMS program; when the seats are replaced they are repainted. That's why you see the orange paint under the chipping blue paint.

well at least SiR R44s can move due to the spacing between stations.
