There was dispute over the window ads because it reduced visibility inside the train and was a safety issue. I don't know if they're doing it again. It was only a test on 4 cars of an 8-car (R44) A train about half a year ago.

Of course and that makes sense. I doubt they would do that again.

Great question.

As for the 7, I was on it the other day with my grandmother and I tell you, the R62A's look so good on that line. I pray they don't get rid of them on that line anytime soon.

R142's on the 7 would be awesome. But the R62's are fine too. But none of them beat the classic red birds.

The 142 and 142a are also incompatible. They cannot be run together in the same consist.

I hope the 7 does not get the R142's from the 6line b/c they are looking old and a mess now and its not due to the lack of maintenance!

What's the difference? The 7 got the R62A's that were in the 'same condition'. At least the r142A's from the 6 are just over 10 years old.

But the R62As are not going to be retired for at least maybe 12-15 or so years. Plus the 7 will get new single cars, since the 7 needs 11-car trains. The single cars will be inserted into a 5-car set to make it 6-cars.

I guess this will happen when the 42nd St extend. is complete. It will also look funny to see the R62a's back on the 6 with the LED green local and Red express but they can still be used even on that line!

Not really that sure at all. They are going over there for CBTC, and that has nothing to do with the extension at all. If the line just isn't ready, it isn't ready.

Sorry, what's the intention by inserting the cars into a pre-set train set instead of just adding it on to the end as a stand-alone?

As we know the 142 and up series of trains only have cabs in 'A' cars. I think the cars being added are B cars, and therefore cant be on the ends. The original 62s had a cab in every car, as we know.

Plus, the MTA probably is not likely to have a single car isolated from the rest of the train even though they have a 'do not cross between cars' 'rule'.
Ideally, they could make it easier by having a single car with cabs on both ends of the car, but probably for safety reasons they would want the car to be acessable to the rest of the train especially in cases of an emergency.

I think that I'm more confused now. The R188 (is that its name?) is going to fit in with the existing 7 fleet of R62/62A or a NEW fleet of transferred R142/142A's? If the latter, then I clearly understand buying an additional 'B' car.

Its going to be a 142-compatible car.

As TwoTimer stated, it will be compatible with the R142s. They will essentially be 'b-cars'. Of course it is not set in stone yet, but that is the likely plan at the moment. This way they would not need to break up a 5-car set to connect it with another 5-car set to make a 6-car train leaving 4 cars left over and unusable.
