Feel free to comment on the new Bronx Gateway Mall near Yankee Stadium. This will become the boro's second largest shopping center after only Bay Plaza in the Northeast Bronx. Here recent news article.

Hundreds of applicants jam Bronx County Building to vie for a job at retailer Target at Gateway Mall

By Tanyanika Samuels
DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER

Friday, May 22nd 2009

Hundreds of job seekers jammed the Bronx County Building Thursday vying for one of 700 jobs at a Target set to open at the new Gateway Mall near Yankee Stadium.

The borough job fair is the latest in an ongoing recruitment effort for several stores opening at the mall. A second job fair will be held from 9 to 12 noon today.

The long line of job seekers circled the massive county complex and people started lining up two hours before the 9 a.m. opening.

Once on line, some waited up to three hours for a brief interview with Target reps looking for cashier, sales clerks, and food service and pharmacy workers.

Shalimar Cintron, 27, of the Bronx, was laid off from her job as a medical receptionist four months ago. She's been looking for full-time work ever since.

"I've had a lot of interviews but nothing yet," she said, "so I figured this was worth a try."

Michael Ventura, 22, of the Bronx, was trying to keep an open mind.

"I want to see what opportunities they have," Ventura said. "A lot of us don't have jobs nowadays so I'm hoping for the best."

Applicants can expect to hear from Target within two weeks.

Target is to open July 26. The mall opens its doors in the fall. Also already being discussed for the near future is an expansion of the area which has included discussion of an movie cinemna. Also rumored intrest from several major hotel chains such as Holiday Inn, Comfort Inn and Ramanda.

I only have one word about this mall, Finally!

I'm glad the Southwest Bronx will have a major shopping center (take that Bay Plaza and Bruckner Plaza too!). I won't have to go to 225th Street for Target and Marshalls. Plus, it's near the 149th-Concourse (2/4/5) station.

There are some downsides. First, if you're driving, you have to pay for parking, similar to Kings Plaza in Brooklyn. Also, the place is gonna get packed due to the Yankees' fans and those coming from Upper Manhattan using the stores. I think it is better off if you access the mall via public transportation.

Well finally The Bronx is actually getting a new shopping center. Fordham Road, The Hub and Bay Plaza are getting old.

Same here, I get pretty tired of the Hub, Fordham, Bay Plaza, and Bruckner Plaza.

Yeah, This mall will Outshine Brooklyn's gateway mall though...

The main reason - it's EASILY accessible to the public.... Malls near stadium's do good anyway....
--------------------------

I agree w/ Cotb & 219... although I can't say much about Bruckner plaza (never actually shopped there), Bay Plaza's always been lackluster (so much so that Bronxites often go to Cross County, and even the Galleria... both of which are in Westchester county), and the strip along Fordham rd has gotten stale pretty fast, much like the fulton mall strip (which has really gone downhill; I say in the next 10 yrs, all those stores will be torn down to create new office bldg's)....

Anyway, Good, I'm glad this mall is fin' to open soon....

Off topic for minute but related. I dont have stats in front of me but i can bet at least 30-40% or more of the customers at the Wal Mart in White Plains are NYC residents mostly from the Bronx or even Washington Heights/Inwood residents.

Ahh actually easy access is not true.

First off trying to get there from 161st street is a wild walk , from the Metro North station is even an Obstacle due to the COnstruction. Walking from the concourse is totally out of the question if you intend on buying large quanities. a route direct to the mall is needed along with a better path from the Train Station

It may be easy, if you're using the MNRR to 153rd St or the 2/4/5 to 149th-Concourse. It is much easier to access the mall from 149th than from 161st St. Besides, there are many garages if you're buying in large quantities.

Lenin aka Cotb16 i think B35 is right? The Bronx Gateway Mall if it been bulit right will be a smash hit. Look what happened in Baltimore when Camden Yards was bulit. The Inner Harbor was bulit up and is now the hot spot of that city.

Hell of a lot easier than walking it out from Euclid av on the A train to the Gateway Mall in Brooklyn.
2 of the buses that serve that damned mall either straddle on the Queens/Brooklyn line, or into Queens itself...

That was my point... it was a comparison b/w the two "Gateway" malls...

But I hear what you are sayin, though.

Yep, it opened this past Sunday. In a few weeks, Marshall's will open at the Bronx Gateway Mall. I saw a picture of the new Target and it was packed on opening day.

damn (can I at least say that...)... walking along the highway... not good at all...
to some extent, that reminds me of the Tanger out in Riverhead...

I'll take a trip up there to the new mall this weekend to see what it's like...

I bet the # of shoppers along Fordham road has decreased... if not instantaneously, it'll happen gradually....
