My NIMBY senses are tingling. NIMBY's in the Hunters Point section of Queens are complaining about the idling of DE30's at the yard near the Long Island City station. Never mind the fact that the yard existed way before these new condos were built.

Agreed. If the tracks was bulit after that 'community' was long around that one thing. To complain after those tracks have been in that area for at least 100 years makes yuppie type NIMBYS look bad everywhere.

Yup, now that they're building up around Hunters Pt / the southern part of Long Island City (they already constructed a concrete median w/ grass between it, around the Court Sq. area; along Jackson av {right by the big Citibank bldg...}), you're gonna start hearing petty little complaints from those ppl that you really didn't hear about before..... This is common whenever an area is being redeveloped.....

Let them complain.
As a result, I hope more LIRR service a] happens & b] is encouraged....

Powering off an FRA Approved Diesel engine is a huge expense. When you re-power the engine the entire thing has to be inspected top to bottom.
Most railroads do not power off Diesel engines between trips no matter how long between the trip.

Not only that, it also takes a while to power down, then probably takes even longer to power up, so by the time they finally shut it down, they'll have to restart it 45 minutes later.

Everyone: Interesting news about complaints about the LIRR trains that lay up in the LIC Yard-it is strictly used for day use mostly and only usually on weekdays.
This is a first-NIMBYs complaining about DAY rail noise-it is usually nighttime that the noise is a problem for people in the vicinity of rail yards. MACTRAXX

Maybe if these accidents had actually checked out the neighborhood enough to realize there is a giant 140-year old yard (or so) yard right outside their window they wouldn't have bought their freaking condo. This is such an ignorant country we live in today. And how much do I bet they'll sue all their problems away and waste even more of the taxpayers' money?

Thats why I can't stand the NIMBY's. The Highways/roads/rails were there probably there about 50-75 years BEFORE they were born, yet they chose to live there. its not like they built the highways, and railroads as the people were already living there.

It's not so much NIMBY's as it is yuppies. These are new yuppies moving into LI City, into new high-rise condos and they haven't realized when they were touring the neighborhood that there was a giant rail facility in their backyard.

Wow, people are retarded. Is bloomberg sure those test scores went up?

The MTA shouldn't pay any attention to these idiots. Are the resident of huntspoint or whatever forgetting that the MTA are the ones providing you service so you can go in and out of the city? Are they forgetting that there are people who actually ride the LIRR? So basically these NIMBY's want to doom LIRR service just for their own purposes, but when the (7) train doesnt run they throw a tirade. If you dont want service to be messed up for you then show the same gratitude and dont try to mess up service for LIRR riders. And dont they realize this yard has been here for YEARS. Who are they to decide how the yard should run? That's like moving to Mcdonald Av and complaining to the city not to run the (F) train late at night because it's too noisy. You people knew there was a yard there then why would you move there in the first place!!????

One thing i learned as a B/O.....not to really take people too seriously. They are miserable, and choose to drag others down with them........

Those same NIMBY's are probaly enviromental extremists with no form of decency to others than their own want and desires....if they don't like it, tough tootles....the MTA is gonna do what they want anyway

I actually blogged about the Daily News article linked to in the initial post. I agree with all of you in regards to the idiocy on display with these complaints.

NIMBY's remind me of the people that live across from the school I go to. Since there's pretty much no parking at the school since there's like 3 students for every parking space, I used to park on this dead end street across from the school. I could find parking easily, and it was easy to get out of. Well, one day when I was there, one of the people that lived in the houses said I couldn't park there because it was a private road or they'd tow my car. If you don't want people parking in front of your house...........why did you move across the street from a college????
