I'll take a trip up there to the new mall this weekend to see what it's like...

I bet the # of shoppers along Fordham road has decreased... if not instantaneously, it'll happen gradually....

I don't think Fordham Road is gonna get impacted, I think 149th St-3rd Av's shopping strip would decrease.

I don't know whether to support the Gateway Mall or be disgusted by it. The appearance of these large chain stores in the Bronx is going to force smaller businesses to close. But yet, they offer jobs. Do the pros outweigh the cons?

Time will tell. For now, the location (700 Exterior Street, according to the Target website) is so new that Hopstop and Trips 123 don't recognize it.
And it's hard to say how much this Target, which for now requires a long walk - or a cab - to get to, will impact local businesses until the MTA starts running a bus over there.

I tend to be disgusted by the these large chain stores when they are put in direct competition with mom and pop stores. The jobs offered by the Walmarts of the world are entry-level and lower management. All other higher level work is at corporate headquarters. There usually is very little community investment by these retailers.

Small businesses are more community based. They tend to support and sponsor youth sports teams and community organizations. They belong to the local chamber of commerce. All of the labor is from the neighborhood, be it the stock clerk or the owner. These businesses use local accountants, advertisers, copywriters, lawyers, suppliers, etc., all who pay local taxes and most likely shop locally.

If the Gateway Mall siphons business from nearby business strips, this will be awful. If it simply competes with Westchester malls, then that's another story.

I can't see this Bronx Gateway mall taking business away from Cross County, & other major shopping areas such as New Roc' & White Plains.... ppl. from the Bronx will still hit up (shop at) those malls in the large numbers they currently do....

Bx. Gateway mall will siphon (as you eloquently put it) business from other shopping strips w/i the bronx, as well as local quote-unquote mom & pop stores... it'll bring in some ppl. from upper manhattan, as well.... the smaller stores up in Washington Hgts. will be also affected by the new mall's opening...

What shopping area/mall in the Bronx I do think would be hurt the most, is the one they built over @ 225th/Broadway... especially if the MTA ever decides to send a bus route that runs at the gateway mall there....

This Bronx Gateway Mall is along a highway. I think the only way the MTA could do is have the Bx19 loop around there or extend a route, but I don't know which one. I'll check it out someday

Truth be told the community needs this, they was handcuffed to DIRTY VIOLATION RIDDLE stores and expensive knock off clothing stores and Merchants just like the movie mall does not affect business neither would this. However the options is better for instance on 161st street there is one supermarket filled with workers baised against you if you do not speak spanish and have no type of customer service skills , now residents have BJ's

Agreed. Bronxites opting to shop in Westchester haven't helped the local economic situation at all...I think the allure of the Westchester malls should be evaluated. What lures shoppers to large malls, anyway?

DISCLAIMER: I've shopped at Westchester before, so I'm not knocking it. Just curious.

I don't get the sense you're knocking those malls out there...

Anyway, what lures shoppers to large malls in general... are other shoppers! Your average person loves being around people - shopping malls makes that a million times easier... lol....
Look @ the malls that do well over the others in a given borough/county/state, and those that don't...

In the Bronx/Westchester case, well... there's a couple things... the "main" reason, I'll just keep my opinion to myself...

I know which supermarket you're talking about, the Food Bazaar in the Concourse Plaza. That supermarket has changed for the worse since it opened 10 years ago. But about the Gateway Mall, you're right, the Southwest Bronx and Upper Manhattan needed it badly.
