Bus Awards '06!
Yesterday the Straphangers Campaign and Transportation Alternatives released our annual "Pokey Award" for the city's slowest buses and handed out a new award - "The Unreliable" - for those buses that arrive off-schedule or in bunches.
And the winners are...
For The Pokey Award: The M14A!
The M14A runs cross-town in Manhattan via 14th Street and is the cityís slowest bus, traveling at about 3.9 miles per hour. Thatís only slightly faster than the average pedestrian!
For The Unreliable: The M1!
The M1, which goes through Manhattan on Madison an Fifth Avenues, was rated the least reliable. According to the MTAís own data, nearly a third of its buses (27.6%) were found to travel in bunches or arrive off-schedule.
The slowest buses in each borough were:
M14A 3.9 MPH West Village to Lower East Side
B35 4.9 MPH Sunset Park to Brownsville
BX19 5.1 MPH Fordham Univ. to Upper Manhattan
Q56 7.2 MPH Jamaica to East New York
S42 11.1 MPH New Brighton to St. George Ferry
And the least reliable buses in each borough were:
M1 27.6% 5th/Madison Aves
B15 24.7% Bushwick to JFK
Bx41 24.2% So. Bronx to Wakefield
S76 24.2% S.I. Ferry to Oakwood

I find this report very funny. It's no surprise that a Manhattan crosstown bus is always the slowest. Those streets are very congested. I also have noticed lots of bus bunching, especially on those with long routes. Oh well, my advice, walk if you can
